I had the exact same problem with my M2. Went through every thing you did and the only thing that solved the problem was replacing the carb body. The theory was that the ethanol gas gummed up a tiny passage to the point that it was beyond cleaning. With the new carb body she ran like a raped ape. Since then have been using marine stable additive to gas and so far so good.

Once again .......the same thing. Started, idled, warmed up for about 5 minutes. Went for a ride around the block. 200 yards later started to sputter and then die. rolled back to my house and tried to start with no luck. |

Have you tried riding it with the gas cap off yet? |

The hose was clear and I took the Gas cap out and cleaned the valve. air was flowing out of both.
If i could get it to start again I would try, but it wont start. |

Yes. wont start with the gas cap off either.
I might try and disconnect the fuel line to the carb to make sure gas is flowing |

yes and cycle the petcock a few times. Theres something keeping fuel out of your engine |

not too sooty and not wet. They are HD 10R12A gaped to 0.040

Put the plugs back in and started her up. Started and idled just fine . Unlike a couple of hours ago when it wouldnt even sputter. |

When it does it again....pull the plugs before it cools down and see if you lost fire. Sounds heat related, you may have a coil going bad. |

next time it happens I will try to do that.
Is there a way I can test the coil now without being stranded on the side of the road?
The other thing that I just thought of is the voltage regulator. I had a problem with a different bike about 15 years ago. |

Probably not. Start it up and if it fires fine, shut it down and test the coil according to the manual. Then start it up and run it close to home until it fails then repeat the test (right away) and note the values compared to the earlier one. You can also do what was said before and look at the spark of the plugs before and after failure. The actual ohm test may be more accurate. I hope we solve this. |

One other thing I just remembered,we had a cyclone that would shut down after a short run and the trouble was a pinched wire coming from the nose cone (ign.)behind the front sprocket. |

Well, I have been super busy with work, but got a chance one day this week to do some testing. I have ohmed (to manuals specs) the coil and the wires. I have cleaned most of the electrical parts and connectors.I took it for a spin around the block twice and seemed fine. I guess now I have to take a longer ride and see how it goes. I also need to find a trailer to have somebody follow me. |

I guess I got to do it to see if I fixed it or not. I was trying to do all of the testing that I could before I get stuck again. I only wish that I had found a problem. |

That is a proven way to foul plugs. Do NOT start the motorcycle unless you can ride it for at least half an hour. You're doing more harm than good by doing that. Put Seafoam in the tank, then fill up, then run it long enough to fill the carb...then LEAVE IT ALONE. If you get time to ride...go for it. If you don't...let it rest. Period. |
