Just got done with a ride from NYC to Prov RI and pulled into my GF's place – as I was walking the bike to the area I park it, I noticed a clicking noise. Hadn't noticed it before I left, but also normally back my bike out of my garage (see below for relevant details).

I didn't see anything obviously out of place (though I only had a small flashlight) and the belt tension seems to be as expected (enough wiggle room to gently push it down to the swingarm).

The clicking noise comes from somewhere near front pulley, when I walk the bike forward. If I slow it down and go at a saunter, it makes more of a leather under tension noise.

The odd thing is that if I roll backwards, it makes the noise for 1/8th of a wheel turn and then is silent... I rolled it far back enough to know that there wasn't a specific spot on the belt. I tried this back and forth a number of times at different distances to make sure I wasn't just catching some tight spots on the belt (I'm pretty sure it wasn't).

I'll check it in the light tomorrow, but wanted to see if anyone has any ideas, and if it may be something dangerous and/or bad for the bike.

Tkx

I've heard this once or twice before... Dont know that its specifically your problem, but in some cases, old belts will stretch, and basically the belt becomes a longer pitch. More so in reverse than forwards, opposite of the wear pattern, the teeth will actually pop into their strake (the gully)

Output shaft bearings maybe? They don't get lubrication and can get rusty and worn before we ever take a look at them.

Very true... it could be the needle bearings in stretched cages....

Running belt to tight will destroy these bearings too .

Try removing the belt from the front pulley ( no need to take it off the bike ) and rotate the front pulley by hand. You will know right away if it is the belt or the needle bearing .....

Let us know how it goes, Dave

Ditto. Mine hooted a little as well. And it will do it even in neutral (as that shaft rotates inside that 5th gear output assembly that drives the front secondary sprocket).

Thanks for the feedback – I just realized that I don't have my tools for pulling the belt off. I inspected the belt and it seems to be in pretty good shape. Will pull it off when back in NYC and see if it becomes more apparent.

Mostly wanted to make sure there wasn't something obvious/risky that was about to happen.

Your belt is sidetracking into the rear hugger belt guard.See a notch worn into it?

I checked all the visible plastic and other surfaces that the belt would obviously touch and didn't see any sign of wear. I will do a little deeper search when I'm back in Brooklyn next week. I rode earlier this week and didn't see anything noticeable in handling or sound, so I'm going to assume it's minor.
