So a couple things lately:

A little while ago I noticed the front mount tabs on my Wileyco muffler setup had cracked and separated from the tube. I also noted there was almost nothing inside the bracket to stop vibration (pretty sure it's the z-bracket style), so I fashioned a uber-grommet out of a marine drain plug to go around the bolt in the bracket then lined everything up and welded the tabs back on. A week or two later I heard a loud "pop" from the exhaust, and when I checked everything out later I noticed this:

- probably pretty hard to tell in the picture but there is a split starting to work its way around the pipe along a weld on the elbow pipe. I would just weld that back together too but I'd like to figure out what caused it so it won't keep happening. Anyone seen something like this happen before? I figure something isn't lined up right and I'd like to find it before I weld it back together.

When I originally bought my bike it had fiberglass header wrap on it, which I removed not long afterwards. Underneath where the wrap used to be the pipes are pretty brown and discolored from what I would assume was water and excessive heat. I can't say I'm too fond of the appearance... Will any ol' metal polish be able to clean this up or do I need to use something special?

well for the header wrap marks, i had the same issue with my ceramic coated header i bought for badweb, someone told me to use very fine steel wool and soap with lots of elbow grease.

Improper installation causes the cracks, breaking of brackets, and exhaust studs ...

OLD SCHOOL is to put on EXHAUST WRAP, but COATED HEADERS are better !!!

EXHAUST ASSEMBLY Class 101, just PM me if you want a copy ...

In the UK the best thing we have found for cleaning headers to virtually as new condition is Wonder wheels alloy wheel cleaner in aerosol form from Halfords.
It is literally a case of spray on and watch all the brown scum run off the pipes any stubborn areas just agitate the cleaner with the brush supplied then rinse off with clean water.............. if you do the pipes on the bike make sure you protect surrounding surfaces though ; )

The exhaust wrap may have also weakened the pipes also

^- true. I also see a concentration of discoloring around the area where the crack is. It almost looks like something other than part misalignment was helping it along. Hot spot? Corrosion? Water collecting on the inside ledge and eroding away at the inside? Seems somewhat far-fetched but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true..

Know of anything near comparable to the Wonder Wheels spray on this side of the pond? I'll probably try the fine steel wool and soap first before I buy anything.
