Replaced my Pinion gear on an 01 cyclone... runs great at low rpms but when I run it up higher, it starts to tick. I'll stop at a stop sign with it ticking like nuts and about 30 seconds at idle seems to cure it... sounds like a lifter to me and it seems to be coming from that "general" area.

It also seems like it takes a lot longer for my oil pressure light to come on after I flip the kill switch.

Any ideas?

A weakened lifter could make the tick come and go. They're easy to change... just don't take the cam cover off. Take the push rods out and their tubes off, and pull the old lifters out with a magnet. I like to soak the new ones overnight in a jar of engine oil to get the air out.

As to the oil pressure holding longer after engine shut down, that's more likely to be a failing sensor. Engines rarely get tighter with use. Quite the opposite.

I'm going to try some fresh syn3 today and see if that helps... hopefully it cures itself after 100 or so miles. If not, I'll use your magnet trick!!! Thanks!

The bike sat for about 10 days with the oil drained waiting on parts to show up, so I probably got a bubble in there somewhere. I'm going to try and work it out today. IF it is still there, I'll try that gas additive.

70 miles and a few ounces of seafoam later.. the tick has not changed a bit. I'm going to pull the lifters tonight.

Is there just one umbrella valve per head? meaning two total on the bike, or should there be a total of four?

Still tapping with the new lifters.

I'm thinking when I tightened the rocker box down the first time I didn't let enough time go by for the lifters to bleed... and now I have a bent pushrod. It is still only one that is tapping.

new pushrods and the ticking still persists. I'm going to get a valve job done.. Already have the heads off. The intake valves had a lot of soot and so did the pistons... bent valve? hopefully this is the problem!

Pitched oil line under the starter, happened when I jacked it up to remove the rear shock. Buckeye Harley Davidson tech told me that it should of been a recall but was not ever too big of a problem???

Really routing new oil lines tonight.

Check the Crank Shaft if you have the top end apart.

wrist pin bushing pin fit
crank big end

have you tried to use a stethoscope to pin point the tick?

the rods should turn easily with no up and down free play, the rods will fall easily if released from the vertical position.
they will have a small amount of left and right at the bottom but should have almost no detectable left right at the wrist pin end.

also check the primary side for this "tick"

Set the cams into place and time, placed the filter on the cover with the bolts poking through holding it on and slid the puppy right on, followed the torque requirements and pattern as described by the service manual.

It is not getting oil to the top of the engine. I know my oil pump is working because I took off the hose and pumped it with just the starter... out came the oil!!

I have replaced all seals and gaskets in the top end. I get pressure to the filter.. and it holds pressure there for a long time. It can sit for 10 minutes and the light will still not come on.. and if I twist the filter off a bit air squirts out.. leave the filter off and crank the engine I get oil coming out as if it was running to the filter. I have tried two different filters

Am I supposed to prime the engine for oil in order for it to flow throughout??? The motor did sit for about a week with no oil and the cam cover off (but covered up so it stayed clean!)

I cannot pinpoint the exact spot of the tick. It sounds like its coming from the lifters and the top end.. as if there is no oil going there at all. I am starting to wonder if I have the correct gasket on the cam cover.. My dealer seemed unsure as to if it was the correct one but it should be the same as the ones for an 01 1200 sporty, because as far as I know the changes didn't come until 2003.

I changed out the oil lines going from the oil reserve to the pump.. cranked the engine for a little while, started it, no oil pressure. primed the new oil lines, got oil to the pump, and now I have oil pressure but it looks like it doesn't go much past the filter... something is blocking it.

The only tick from the primary side is coming from the rockerboxes.. and a stethoscope would make me go deaf. It sounds like a worn out 500 horsepower singer sewing machine with no oil.

I have a harley davidson and a mobil 1 filter. nothing changes with either filter.

The oil feed lines on an evo engine are hidden in the cylinder and pass through several gaskets to get "upstairs".
Is it possible that one of the gaskets isn't aligned correctly so that the passageway is blocked?

There is a caution in the FSM about the cover gasket is different

I hope that no damage was done.

I have been following with interest.
I had the local guru rebuild my whole motor.It came back sounding like a bucket of bolts.
When I asked about the ticking I was treated like a complete dick.
How would I determine if the oil feed to the top end is adequate ?

Alfau: PM sent

Two seasons: I HAD the gasket with only one oil passage. IF I had any common sense I would of compared the two. My "incorrect" gasket is all torn apart. It was cork in color with an orange rubber seal around it. The correct one is black, no rubber, with 5 oil passages in it, just like the first picture above from 1313.

25263-90C is the part number, however it was "upgraded" to a different one with the same part number, but a "D" suffix. (25263-90D) I installed the D gasket and it runs like a champ now!

Sounds like your problem right there.

Mine's been pretty noisy for the past 20K+ miles, but only because it has noisier parts inside.

I have had some instances of "bad" noise, such as lifters gone bad, loose engine sprocket nut, and a twisted crank that had pistons lightly hitting the cylinder head at high rpm.

If you have the rocker cover off, you should see one drop of oil per second emerging at idle.
I had a similar problem with my X1W but it turned out the passageway behind the oil pressure sensor was FULL of drilling swarf. I pulled the sensor, gave it a blast of compressed air and it all came puking out.
This was a brand new bike, too.
Tracking the problem down took some doing.

Was HarLee selling Buell their factory seconds? I'd say so. Just look at all of the shifter detente plate problems from the pins backing out which the Fruitsters never had, for instance.

That reminds me of when I took my oil tank off and cleaned it out to re-glue the grommets. There was a big corkscrewed piece of plastic in there from when the holes were originally drilled out.
