Is this the exhaust "Y - mount" that comes so highly recommended? Looks weird from this angle.

Nope!
That's the front mount for the rear shock.

They must have taken the bike apart in a hurry.

That's from an M2. The VR on an S1 doesn't mount up front, it mounts near the battery.

Yea, it's for the later M2's and the side opposite the shock mount does bolt to the front muffler mount.
