Okay, finally got the 2001 X1 back together after the motor mount broke in 2010. It has a Stage two kit,1250 cylinders/pistons new ham can, NRHS front mount. I even put in the racetech goldvalve kit.

Now I'm ready to reset the TPS and check the static timing. But the trusty old VTSDS software won't connect to the ECM. Well it seems to ID the ECM in the test function, but complains about a license file.

So I went and purchased an ECMSpy cable, downloaded the ECMSPY software (version 1.2.27). I installed the driver for the usb to serial cable and the operationg system is happy. BUT I can't connect to the ECM. I get a NAK error.

I'm a twenty + year veteran of embedded device/system development. I've managed all sorts of Unix/Linux/Cisco IOS devices via serial ports and I've even done WAN serial links via Rockwell nethoppers, Telebit routers and such. I used to get serial ports, but now I'm wondering.

So to test the cable I jumped pins 1 (RX) to 3 (TX) and sure enough the terminal echo's my characters as expected (echo is off on the terminal emulator). Pin 2 is ground and Pin 4 isn't wired. It shoould be +12v according to this document. Do I need that?

Here's some shots of the Windoze config related to the port. I'm guessing I'm being stupid, anybody have any ideas? I really want to ride this thing! It runs, but its a bit soft at the bottom and a little rough all the way around

I've had issues connecting to certain network devices using USB hosted serial ports. No idea why. When I use an older laptop with a non USB hosted serial port, I can get in just fine.

Is anyone else using a USB serial converter successfully with ECMSpy?

Windows with serial ports is voodoo. Windows with serial ports via a USB computer is drunken voodoo.

I never have trouble with serial ports under Linux, I *always* have touble with them under windows.

Not any concrete help, but maybe some moral support. : (

I think it's important to install EcmSpy first then Install the cable driver in that order. If necessary,Uninstall do it again.

EcmSpy running, cable connected,Ignition on, bike in neutral, kill switch in the run position,
Use communications option in EcmSpy to auto detect. When cable is detected use the Keys on EcmSpy desktop to give you the live feed.

Ha!

Solved!

You'll guys will love this one. A real RTFM moment. While searching through tons of posts I hit one in the Uly section that said "hit the Key icon several times even if the communication test fails"

Sure enough, I'm in now it works from Win 7 (ultrabook) and WinXP (netbook).

the gauges are a bit slow to react and there are lots of error messages, but I was able to reset the TPS and now she runs very well. Just the timing to check and resetting the AFV to see where that goes.

I must be getting old. Thanks for the input

After 2 years I'm back (now to remember she needs to be broken in again....)

Excellent.

Don't ask me how much time I wasted after doing a TPS reset on a whim (but not backing out the idle screw first). Oops.
