I had an HD-only dealer in OKC downright refuse to sell me head bolts because I made the mistake of telling him they were for an X1. Even tried asking if I could buy the Sportster head bolts just to waste money.. parts guy just would not sell them.
Jackasses. October 15th, 2009 was the second happiest day of my entire Buell ownership experience. (I bought my brand new XT on the 16th) |

LOL Oklahoma city was the same place that set my X1 timing back "just a bit" and made it run like crap in 2001.
They used to cover Buells back then.
They didn't have a clue what they were doing.
Good to know that some things stay the same  |

Buy a gift certificate. If you have a Buell, you'll eventually need/want something from American Sport Bike. |

Wow! Im a parts manager at a southern california stealer, if one of my parts guys said that id fire him! We are a hd only dealer but if i can get u a part that works for you ill sell it. For the simple fact i want to make a sale forget that im a buell owner and i understand the need for and the lack of parts what a jack ass! |

When HD stops selling us critical parts, Al at American Sport Bike is the guy that will be there making sure we have what we need. I would just pick up the phone and give him a call and introduce yourself. I'd bet you can work something out. |

Just ended up buying the crank seal as well and some brake fluid to bring the price up to 20.50 so I'll have something else to do while I've got 'er opened up. I guess the manual isn't very clear how to actually get to the crank seal - is it possible to replace it by just taking off the engine sprocket and spacer behind it? Do I need any special tools to get the sprocket off? thanks for all the help guys. |

Zylstra HD in Elk River Mn is awesome they still have a Buell on the floor (used) but the parts guys love Buells so they help for everything and one of them has a highly modified Buell so he knows what things fit |

Don't you feel sorry for the SPORTSTER Riders that are treated the same way the BUELL Riders are and this has been going on since 1952(K Models) !!! |

Yes, a sprocket locking tool, which is basically a piece of flat stock aluminum, (or aluminium if you're Brittish) that you jamb in between the crank and clutch sprockets so you can turn the crank and clutch nuts without the engine turning. You do not have to disassemble the clutch, but you do have to remove it. The crank and clutch sprockets and chain come off as a unit.
***The clutch nut is a LEFT HANDED THREAD.***
Follow the service manual for clutch removal, except the part about disassembling the basket. |

You will need a couple of big sockets and a big torque wrench.
From Socalrider: The sockets for the primary were 1 1/8 and 1 3/16
Some people have used standard door hinge as a locking bar. I believe the OEM tool is 4 1/8" X 1". I used an electric edger blade cut to 4 1/8".
I had a hell of a time getting the old seal out.
The new seal can't be driven in to far but must be driven in far enough. A special seal driver tool exists to put in in just the right amount or you will soon be doing the job over again. Some info around here on homemade seal driver tools.
You also want a new shift-shaft seal when you re-install the primary cover. |

Because you can't move the starter motor all the way out to get the new gasket in and proper clean all the paper gasket crap off.
Remember his X1 has the under frame header, not an over frame like your S1. |

NOT a standard door hinge!
It was a BRASS door hinge.
Verify it with a magnet some are plated.
Or an aluminum block that is pointy on each end.
HAS to be softer than the steel teeth or damage-o-rama. |

What Psykick said on page 1 above is important, for any future readers who need to diagnose. Spraying on a powder, like an aerosol foot powder, is really helpful to trace the source of a leak.
