Has anyone used the Barnett extra plate clutch to replace the grenade plate and how does it work? Are there any other alternatives?

Do not think "i" would try to mix apples and oranges ...

By the way, does'nt the Barnett clutch require a stronger clutch spring than the SPORTSTER CLUTCH ???

I thought the extra plate allowed you to use a softer spring due to the extra friction surface area?

Or is it a no grenade plate + more durability thing?

Not trying to be sarcastic. I actually don't know.

its just another 3 bits of surface area from inside basket to outside basket. Do it.

Got it in my S3T when the grenade plate did exactly that. Replaced ALL the clutch plates and steels with new Barnett - with the one extra steel and two extra friction plates or the other way `round - I forget. AND the 15% heaver spring, you don't need that unless you are racing but I'm too lazy to change it back. VERY positive clutch engagement! The "majik slip zone" is about 1/32" . Soft launches require real finesse. Hard launches are AWESOME - I use just a wee bit of slip and I can't even tell the front wheel isn't touching `till I shift.

[Sux dog butt in heavy traffic] YMMV

the brass rivets on the grenade plate break and fly into the basket making smooth clutch operation a pipe dream.

Energy One is an alternative that I have, and like. BTX-011, has extra plate and 15% stronger diaphram spring.

With a rebuild to 88 cu.in. on my 98 S3T I'm trying to incorporate all the latest updates. Getting rid of the grenade plate While using the stock spring was what I was after. At 68,000 miles the stock clutch and spring plate actually look pretty good but I don't want to go back in once everything is buttoned up.

I have no problems yet so i will keep the factory stuff for now. I am sure the clutch packs are better now than back in the 70s. It is so nice to have the input from others here now. And the ability to read everyones opinion and decide for ourselves on how we play with our toys.

"Only have 111,671.35 miles on my SPRING PLATE removed OEM CLUTCH ..."

I completely believe that. When my grenade plate went out at 50K, the rest of the plates looked perfect.
Little brass rivets ate the adjacent plates away.

Stupidly, I installed another sportster clutch set because the local dealer had it in stock. I should swap out that plate soon I think.

I've got the extra plate kit using the stock spring on my 88" S1W. No problems with it at all. Slightly firmer pull on the lever but still fine.

I have this kit on my bike as well. Less than 500 miles but no gripes about it so far. Im using stock spring as well. Feels just as good or better than stock!

The spring is stronger but it doesn't require any stronger clutch pull. Check out the website.

You would probably want to have the Factory Service Manual. You should be able to use the one for the S2 here on Badweb.

I think you will need to remove the primary cover which means you will need a new gasket and shift-shaft seal. You will need a nice pair of snap-ring pliers. It is recommended that you do not reuse snap rings so you will need new snap rings.

You will need to make or buy or borrow a clutch spring compressor tool.

A quart of fresh fluid to put back in when you are done (It uses slightly less than a quart).

I think that's about it.

Neil, If you want you can come over and we can change your clutch in the sea box. I made the spring compressor out of PVC and have not have a problem with it. I replaced the grenade plate with the stock stuff and it requires a little finesse to launch smooth but the grab is plenty strong without making the clutch more of a bear in traffic.
