These keep on breaking, is this normal? I replaced a broken one in March, again in May, and it broke again yesterday! I have the race exhaust. I checked the headers and the canister for any loose parts and everything seems solid.

Where is it breaking at? Is it mounted to the rear of the can? Is the bracket it is attached to hooked to the Z bracket properly?

I would fab up another bracket with 2 slots for 2 of those clamps to mount. That is what i ended up doing with mine. I also replaced the rubber bushings on the Z bracket itself. They are kind of hard to see but they are up in there. Mine is a 01 X1 so mine already had the updated y hanger on it.

It's mounted to the front of the can. The breaks are at the same spot: right below where it bolts on to the crankcase. The clamp is visible on my profile pic. I'll post a better pic in the evening.

Three years ago,After repeated problems,I welded on a standard strap type exhaust clamp. (stainless steel welding rod)

There is always oil there..I'm not sure where is coming from!

As long as you "IMPROPERLY INSTALL" your EXHAUST SYSTEM things will BREAK !!!

Finger tighten everything from the heads moving along the same direction as the flow of exhaust. Tighten everything gradually up to manual recommended torque and, following the same direction as before.

Yep.

Sounds like mis-alignment of at least one component to me.

And...I don't think I've ever seen a race exhaust mounted there before. I'll go check my S1W and my M2 at some point to verify...but that could be part of the problem.

The exhaust should not be mounted directly to the engine. It should be mounted to the isolator shown - right in front of the broken torca clamp.

Thanks for all the input guys. The exhaust was installed like this when I bought the bike-I'm the third owner. So..when the clamp broke, I just got a new one from Al. It would be great if someone could post a picture of a correctly installed race can on an X1.

You already have the updated front exhaust mounting bracket.(the y hanger) .

As mentioned above,"fab up another bracket with 2 slots for 2 of those clamps to mount."

You might have a hard time finding the front exhaust hanger bracket for race muffler. Easy enough to replicate.

Looks like you need the race header shoe. They pop up on here occasionally, or you will have to improvise or fabricate a proprt replacment.

on a related topic: There is always some oil around the spot where I have the torca clamp attached...one or two drops on the clamp. oil stains on the crankcase, the can as well as the shock. I cleaned the whole thing up once or twice to try and figure out a leak, but so far I haven't found anything.

Well..I fixed it. I got a heavy duty exhaust hanging strip from the local Napa. used two strips and hung it to the Y hanger. Tightened the top close with a long bolt with rubber grommets cushioning every possible contact point. We'll see how long this lasts : )
Initially I was thinking that I would get a heavy duty clamp and a heavy duty spring and attach it that way, but the alternate method was easier
