I tried searching it but didn't find what I was looking for. I remember somebody mentioned seeing smoke in the headlight while at rest during the night. He said he changed the valve steam seals to a different type. I'm getting that same smoke and am ready to change out the seals, but don't know which ones to look for. What is the best seal to run? It is on a 2001 X1 and everything for the heads is stock AFAIK except for the XB rocker box conversion.
Thanks
William

You can check the stem seals by dropping the header and looking into the exhaust port. The exhaust stem seals leaking will create a massive amount of black gunk on the exhaust valve. The intake stem seal leaking is a little harder to see since it is pulled into the cylinder, but excessive oil consumption is a clue as well as blue smoke from your exhaust pipe. Replacement requires a valve spring compressor and head removal, often leading to other expensive improvements. After all, leaking seals will have created a mess of carbon to clean off, might as well just go ahead and do a valve job. and since you pull the heads, you will have to pull the jugs and replace the base gasket. Good time for cylinder hone and new rings, maybe a 1250 kit. Really a good job for winter unless your stem seals are so bad the bike is using more oil than gas.

I do have a catch can mounted to the front of the bike as well, but it is not just vapor from vent. I recall reading on here of someone that changed the type of seal used. Something like the stock seals were a poor design and he found an improved seal. The engine has about 28,000 miles since the top end was done. That job included boring the cylinders and new pistons and a valve job. The oil consumption isn't excessive, I never kept track of it, but I would say something around a quart every 2000 miles. I'm not worried about changing the seals themselves, just which ones to buy. The smoke happens regardless of how I ride. I also have another buell to ride while this is apart, plus I'm off of school for the summer and I would like to take care of this now.
Thanks
William
