Just completed an engine overhaul and powder coated frame and have no signal voltage at the coil plug in. I was able to connect to ECMspy and set the tps zero and static timing and the bike shows no trouble codes. I have continuity from the ECM plug to the coil plug-in and have 12v at the center pin. I thought I found the problem when I noticed the lean angle sensor mounted upside down. Dah! Corrected but still no fire.
When I had the frame coated I made sure to mask certain obvious areas from being coated to preserve the ground. I may have missed something. Tried swapping out the lean angle sensor and the ECM but no luck.
I will be making myself a breakout box to help in diagnosing problems in the future. Any ideas will be appreciated.
Steve

Steve, I am still trying to get a hold of Hugh. He might have a good idea. If you use the search function here with "coil spark ground" you find a lot of related articles which might help.

Anyone?

I looked at Steve's bike yesterday and couldn't come up with a good suggestion either.....

If I remember right, you might check that the Voltage Regulator has a good ground.

Steve,

I just got Cornel's message. You already checked the first thing I thought of (continuity from ECM to coil plug). It couldn't hurt to go back and check the grounds, but I suspect that's not it.

Swapping ECM's would seem to rule that out as being a problem. What about the timing sensor? I would expect this signal triggers the ECM to send fire the coil. You could check the sensor itself (I'm guessing there's a recommended ohm reading for it) and check continuity between the connection for it and the ECM plugs.

I'm guessing this is going to be something really simple; just stick with it until you find it. Good luck!

Start where BATTERY/GROUND is not and find where it is ...

Thanks for the replies everyone. I did have the cam sensor out of the cover for machining but when I set the static timing you could see the timing change and it ended up in the middle of the adjustment slot when at TDC. I need to check the lean angle sensor wiring to make sure I don't have an open somewhere. I sent Al at American Sport Bikes a note descibing my problem and will talk to him tomorrow.
I did so many things to this bike that I had an idea it could become a bear. I did change the original wiring harness with 1 that I got off ebay.
When I mounted the improved exhaust hanger I had instructions for properly grounding the voltage regulator. I will be checking all grounds after checking the angle sensor leads.
Thanks again!!
Steve

Do you have timing signal going IN to the ECM?

Coming OUT of the sensor?

Coming OUT of the ECM to the coil?

It sounds like you have a good handle on how things work, just take it a step at a time. Is the sensor working? Does the ECM see it? Does the ECM send a signal out to the coil? Is it getting to the coil? There's not many links in this chain...it's just a matter of isolating each one and testing it.

Bump on this- I hate troubleshooting threads that never get resolved!

Any progress getting it running?
