Stopped to get gas and when it was time to go, I reached up to turn the ignition on and it wouldn't turn. After 45 min to an hour of fidgeting, oiling, cussing, etc it finally turned...no dash lights, ignition, etc. Still stranded at that point.

After getting a tow home by my bro, I sprayed some contact cleaner in it and still no go. So, I guess the switch is bad.

Is there anything else I can try to see if the switch can be saved? I know I can get a new switch from asb, but the key won't match. Can my current key be used with a factory ignition switch or would I still be looking at having two separate keys?

All help is welcome!

When I was trouble shooting an issue on an X-1, I made a harness to bypass the switch. I now carry it with me, just in case.

You might want to check w/a dealer ref the cost of a new, matching switch. Give what I remember the price being, carrying 2 keys was a very good option.

How did you make the harness to by-pass the switch? Is there a thread on here for that? I think it would be a good idea to have one.

Find the connector to the switch wires under the dash. All three wires have to be shorted to one another. A connector from an old junk switch can have its wires soldered together and insulated quite easily. There are no threads on hot-wiring bikes posted.

New ignition switch for my M2 was $175.00 recently at the stealership.

Time to get creative!

Well, it is definitely my ignition switch. This afternoon I by-passed the ignition switch per Akbuell's instructions and immediately got all dash lights, fuel pump came on, and bumped the starter to see if it would turn over; it did.

Does anyone know where I can get a plug like the one I cut off the bad switch? I would love to make a harness w/a toggle switch that I could just plug into the wiring harness in case I ever had a bad switch again. Then I could plug and play, so to speak, and have the ability to turn off the ignition. This could allow me to ride home and/or be able to ride the bike until a new switch could be installed.

Has anyone ever put the switch from asb on an S3? On the website it says that some modification of the dash may be necessary on some models. Not really wanting to deal w/that, so I'd like to know before I order one from Al.

Thanks for all the help. Before long, I'll be ready to open a Buell repair shop.

On my X1 the oval shape of the aftermarket switch base was about 1/16" larger than stock, a die grinder with a end safe cut burr will allow you to enlarge the recess without worry of cutting too deep thru the dash.

If you don't do this the switch threads will only go about 1/3 the way through the nut.

You will also have to reverse the red wires with the black and white tracers or the prk/ign will be backwards.

Just search eBay for a used switch, cut the connector off it, and use that for an emergency spare.
I always carry one on my S2.
