Hey guys. Not sure what to do here. After I got home today from riding...I noticed a small puddle of oil under the bike. Found that the rear shock was leaking. I just go the bike about 3 weeks ago. According to the Harley dealer...I've already had the recall done and no recalls are open. According to what I can tell from this board...I have the 1st recall shock and not the 2nd recall shock. My shock is the 16.5" shock...which I believe is the 1st recall? How do I go about trying to get a harley dealer to see this isn't the correct one? They say there is no more recalls? I don't have $700 for a new one...and would much rather get the free recall shock! Any help and how to do this would greatly be appreciated! Thanks guys! | ||

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe there is a time limit for acting on recalls that applies to the original owner and, according to the dealer, yours is already recalled and you are not the original owner. So, if that is the case, the leaking will likely not affect the ride or handling for as long as it will take to save up enough $$$ to either get a new updated stock shock or a better aftermarket rebuildable one for a few bucks more. | ||

Check here, seller had NOS shocks $250 each. I picked one up while I had the chance, he may have more. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 670463.html Also I believe quite a few have now had their stock shocks rebuilt by Racetech for roughly $150-180. I opted for the NOS because it was about the same if I had paid for shipping to send my leaker to Racetech for the rebuild. (Message edited by ustorque on June 07, 2012) | ||

Just keep in mind an NOS is of the same vintage (and the rubber seals are just as old) as the stock shocks people have leaking on their bikes now. I'd go rebuild, with FRESH seals, or aftermarket. My S1W has a Penske I bought used from the race team years ago, and my S2 has a Works. Both user-rebuildable. | ||

I didn't think recalls were limited to the original owner...but maybe so? I also didn't think there was a time frame on Safety Recalls? So you guys think it's safe to ride on? I found that it's leaking the "sludge" from the front and now the watery dark black oil from the back. Damn...this sucks! | ||

These discussions tend to wander toward "what my sister's roommate's cousin's neighbor told me". Try THIS P.S. - My personal favorite was where a poster said, claiming knowledge and certainty, that a "mandatory" recall meant the vehicle had to be returned to the factory to be rebuilt. | ||

Thanks Court. I quickly went through it and I think it says that any owner at the time is eligible for the recall? Is that true? I didn't see anything about a timeline though...do they expire? So, there should be better records about the 2nd recall, right? I'm sure I'm SOS but I'll keep trying to get this figured out. Does anybody have any paperwork stating/showing this 2nd recall? | ||

Thanks Hoot. Great site for this kind of info. I found both recalls on there. So they were within 1 month of each other? SO do you think this is a case of the dealer not realizing the 2nd one and just kept putting the 1st recall shock on and then thinking it was the fix for both? Trying to figure out why the records think we are all up-to-date even though we're not? | ||

When looking for replacement shocks, I found many first recall shocks available on eBay. Could be that someone reinstalled a recalled shock and the associated front mount. When this one goes (and it will) I'll be going with a Penske. I may not wait until it fails. By all accounts, the Penske is a massively good upgrade. | ||

Only $2800? All the more reason to not flinch at putting a good shock on it  I paid $13K for mine. | ||

It all gets pretty confusing, I just went thru the whole thing recently too. The freebies are long since gone and most low price goodwill deals from any dealers are also now just legend. Best thing you can do is decide how you will be using your S1 and buy the shock that will best serve your needs or have your leaker repaired by racetech. As I said earlier, I opted for the "new old stock" showa that I was able to get and only time will tell if i made the right decision. | ||

Racetech rebuild for your weight and riding style with their Gold valve kit produces a shock superior to the stock unit. It will set you back $300 or so. The down side is that the shock is subject to the same design flaws although the quality of the new parts will be superior to the originals. I'm happy with mine so far but only time will tell. | ||

Just to clarify federal law says recalls must be honored throughout the lif of the item regardless of owner. That does not say they did not get rid of the good shock and stuck you with the old! Look around ebay etc but racetrch is a good method best is Works, Penske, or twin motorcycles has one coming out! | ||

you can use a recall shock. they have lousy seals and will fail. You will eventually want a Penske or Works. I have stock short and long that has GP Suspension valving and a big boy heavy spring, it's been rebuilt several times. POS both of them, u pay postage and I'll send them both to you. | ||

I called my dealer today and they found one at some dealer in Ohio. They said they would sell it to me at cost...which is about $365. Thinking I should just get the better aftermarket one and be done with it. Sent you a PM Danny. Well I learned a lot today! Gotta say...this bike does get a lot of attention and I love it!
