So quick story and hopefully I can get some opinions. Today I commuted on the S3, the 2 hour ride in at 4 am was awesome, the ride home was not as pleasant. After about An hour and 15 minutes at about 70mph I got stuck in almost dead stopped traffic in downtown Boston. After about 20 minutes barely moving my idle jumped from its normal 1k to about 1500 and it began to ping badly and then what just sounded like piston slap. No engine light went off, but man oh man was she hot! Does the 2000 S3 have a skip spark mode like the XB's and is that what I experienced? The engine noise did clear up after a bit of normal speed riding, but It was a terrible sound. And lucky me, my slight rocker box leak really picked up the flow during the overheat.

I'm on the south shore now Greg, but I'm still commuting up to Durham nh everyday for work. I'm hoping it ends soon.

"i" put a SPORTSTER OIL COOLER and a BUELL FAN to prevent such heating problems in traffic ...

You have two choses, turn the engine off or get moving !!!

I thought I learned on here that the oil pump really doesn't pump oil that good at idle below 1700k. I idle mine between 1700k and 1900k and it seems much happier than the lower idle. Not that this would make a difference in heavy stop-n-go traffic.

Never set the idle any lower that 1000 RPM ...

Now if you put on a electric oil pump that cures the low RPM problem ...

So let me get this straight, In the event of ETS reaching ? temperature, skip spark kicks in shuts down rear cylinder and raises idle for engine to run on front cylinder only? I know the XB's throw a specific CEL pattern when they go into skip spark so i was expecting if the S3 ever did it that it would do the same. It just seemed like way to short of a time period for it to happen and on a fairly mild day.

Is anyone running the optional cooling fan kit? If so have you found it useful in traffic situations?

I believe the skip spark mode causes the bike to skip every other firing on both cylinders. The unburned fuel helps cool the bike.

The fan will help in the stop and go traffic. The overheating of the FI system is wait makes it run like crap. The fan is intended to cool the fuel rail and manifold. Of course moving some air between the cylinders is good for the rest of the bike too.
