will someone with a little more engineering background gimme a hand...

i have the xb wheel, custom spacers, stock brake caliper bracket and stock steel swingarm and axle.

these spacers


it keeps eating up the bearing on the caliper bracket side.

what would cause this? is it possible im over-tightening or under-tightening? is it more likely the whole system is too wide/narrow? something else im missing?

ive changed the bearing so many times now i think it has finally ruined the wheel and i might need to replace it. i havent gotten it apart yet to find out.

the only way i can figure out how to remedy the problem is to take the entire swingarm off and bring it assembled to a machinist and have him figure it all out.

you`re bearings get to much pressure on the sides.
i`ve also got a xb wheel on my x1 and experienced the same problems.

took my buell to a mechanic,he measured it and adjusted it.

If you over TORQUE(tighten) the axle nut it will cause the wheel bearings to go bad because it crushes the wheel bearing spacer inside the wheel ...

Did you see the BUELL technicion use a BAR TYPE TORQUE WRENCH to tighten the axle nut ???

knock on wood, my wheel bearings are still good... but i only have about 1100 miles on my XB wheels so far..... hope to have a lot more starting next week though so im going to keep a sharp eye out on them after hearing about this.

Are you using the newer style orange bearing?

The newer "orange seal" visual inspection no longer works. In 2009 they went back to using a black seal which made it more difficult to recognize which generation of bearing was being used.

If the internal bearing spacer is too short, it will side load the bearing and kill it no matter what you do. If you are using the stock aluminum xb spacer, overtightening it once is enough to put enough crush in it to shorten it.

i dont know what torque im using, im tightening it to where the wheel starts not wanting to turn then backing off a little.

i guess thats pretty red-neck and probably my problem

Sounds to me the internal bearing spacer is to short or might even be missing completely as the wheel should spin freely when the axle is tightened.

Buy the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL(and PARTS BOOK) for your YEAR/MODEL BUELL ...

....+1 to what Buellistic said.I've always said to folks who are working on their own bikes:get the shop manual and parts manual and get the right/proper tools to do the job.Please,please,please don'r second guess on things on the bike.....you'll later regret it.Thank you once again Buellistic.

If the wheel gets hard to turn, there is definately a problem with either the internal bearing spacer, or the brake caliper mounting causing side load on the brake disc.

Torque on an XB wheel is around 50 foot pounds. It should spin freely, otherwise see the above.

Just 2¢. But if the wheel ever gets hard to turn,some spacer somewhere is not long enough. I agree ,probably the inside one is a little short. Make it from steel=less likely to crush it with torque method used.

"IMPROPER" TORQUE crushes wheel spacers, strips aluminum threads, stress cracks fasteners(ie: bolts, studs, and allan screws), crushes gaskets to where they can not seal properly, and warps aluminum covers(ie: cam, primary, and rocker arm) !!!
