Hi, does anyone know if a 16.5" rear shock is interchangeable between a '98 S1W and a '99 S3? |

The '99 should have had the recall done. The recall changed the rear shock to a 14.7" length. All newer Buell shocks were the shorter one. You'd need the 16.5" front bracket to make it work. I believe they went to the 14.7" to reduce the flexing of the shock. IIRC, that makes the seal pop, as the travel isn't linear, and out comes the oil. |

There are 2 lengths of recall shocks, my 96s1 recall shock has a long neck attaching to the swingarm. The newer recall shocks have almost no-neck attachment points. |

Yes it will work but you need the front bracket for the long shock |

Thanks for the info. I already have a 16.5" shock on both my S1Ws so was looking for something as a spare. |
