I generally like to stay with the recommended tire sizes as quite a bit of though goes into the selection. My Metzler on the back of my S1 is shot but Cycle Gear has a great deal on a pair of Pirelli Diablos. The catch is that the back tire is a 180/55 instead of a 170/60. Any fitment issues or handling quirks that are likely to surface?

I thought the PM wheels were supposed to have the 180/55's.

I know the cast wheels are supposed to have the 170's.

I put the 180's on my cast wheels because I prefer the feel to the 170's.

My PM-equipped S3 had a 170 installed when I bought it, and switching to a 180 made for a noticeable improvement in handling. The 170 had a weirdly flat profile on the wheel and made the steering feel heavy.

I have run 180 and 170, don't feel much difference in handling, but the 170 is a lot easier for me to install.

Thanks for the feedback guys. My concern was that squeezing a fatter tire onto a rim that was not designed for it would change the shape of the tire causing it to be higher in the center. I had heard that it would cause the bike to be very tippy into turns. Since they are being installed on a machine, I won't have to worry about the wrestling match to install it

170 WAS standard on the PM wheel back then, however as tire castings change and evolve, now 180 is the standard. The important part is what wheel width the profile of the tire radius was designed for. 180's are designed to be expanded on a 5.5" width. Now most people will tell you that its ok to run a 190 on a 5.5. And sure it is OK to run it... But you should be expecting no more than a touring tire performance as it rounds out the radius, removing most of the apex. Most people will say that you should NEVER run a 190 on a 5.5. And for th emost part they are right. However Some molds are designed for the 5.5" I believe it is dunlop who does this?

Its all relative.
