I have the measurements for the windscreen decal. But the tail and tank I have no clue where to start other than pictures off of google. How did the factory put the decals on in the exact same place every time? Did they have a jig? Also it looks like the tail and windscreen decals were cleared over, can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks in advance for any info!

My S1W has original bodywork and yes, it appears all the original decals were placed on the color coat, then clearcoated over.

Note: my "recall" fuel tank has the 3D Buell logos and they - obviously - are not cleared over : )

Even the tank is cleared over? Non "3D" original decal, white BUELL and torn American Motorcycles.

CORRECT! Even the non 3D tank decals were cleared over. As Joe mentioned, the 3D tank decals were not cleared over.

At least from the factory...

Gotcha! Now how to figure out the placement? Were the decals put on already when the body parts got to the factory? Obviously they would have been if they were cleared over. If I remember correctly the painting was not done in house correct?

Anybody willing to take some measurements of their factory stuff. It's a Molten Orange S1W.

Thanks for the help so far ratbuell and 1313.

Red93stang,

Tell me how you want to take the measurements from and I can take some measurements off my '96 S1, still has the stock decals on it.

Thanks Hogluvr! I'll be in touch. Mine has a Manta tank being a W model. But I will hit you up for the tail measurement when it's time.

Dang, I forgot the Ws had a bigger tank, sorry. I'm gonna have a similar problem if I pick up this S2 I'm trying to deal on, it was repainted and there are no stickers on the tank. Yeah, I can definitely help you with the tail, I have a brand new one in the box painted from the factory that the PO gave me!

That would be incorrect. All of the Buell Motorcycle Company painting was done onsite. Heck, all of the production S2 bodywork was made (and bodyworked, sanded, primed, painted, cleared and buffed) onsite.

Unfortunately I don't recall if a template was used back in those days, although I know there were templates for the XB & later bikes.

Sorry I can't be of more help,
