I have a '99 S3T that I purchased in February of 2012. It had 25k miles when I bought it and more than 27k on it now.

I began having trouble with it skipping and brief loss of power a few weeks ago on April 1st. If interested, you can read my other thread here for a description and actions regarding the issue, which is yet to be resolved: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/669579.html?1334696221

The reason for this thread is basically a fishing expedition for information/advice regarding the early DDFI Buells and more specifically the S3, since that is the bike I have. I'm all but certain that at least one of you on here has had the exact issue that I'm currently having and can tell me exactly what the fix is. I'm sure to encounter other issues over time that have already been experienced and fixed by at least one, and likely several/many, of you folks here.

If you have decided to read this post and ride or have worked on/ridden/owned an early DDFI Buell and particularly the S3(T), I would like for you to post a list of the problems you have had and how you fixed them; a link to the thread(s) you posted about the problem or the threads that were helpful in resolving the problem would be awesome! Don't limit it to problems w/DDFI, which is my current problem. I want to know about every one so I can know what I might expect and will be able to find the solution quickly w/out setting foot in a HD service department! I think all of you know where I'm coming from with that statement.

I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

Log some data using ECMSpy then you will see what signals are dropping out...

Follow my directions for reading your DTC code(s). Then report back with what you found.

2seasons, ecmspy only shows the historical code 13, which is the o2 sensor; HD replaced that to the tune of $140 labor last week. I supplied the $20 part from AutoZone.

Pash, how do I do the data logging? I'm new to ecmspy as of today. The only thing that initially looked off is the TPS setting. The ECMSpy pdf says it should be between 4.6 and 5.1% and mine is at 5.6. I'm going to try a TPS reset Saturday when I have more time.

Any opinions?

Like I said in the last post my S3 was doing something similar.. It would throw a code for the O2 sensor.. I replaced the sensor with one from Autozone but it did not solve the running issue ( it would stumble at part throttle ) this was before ECM Spy was developed so I took it to the dealer who had it for several days.. I got a call saying my bike was fixed _ went to pick it up and asked what was the problem and they tell me it was the O2 sensor and they have changed it out.. Explained to them as I had when I dropped it off that it had a new O2 sensor in it and took it for a test ride before I loaded it up.. Sure enough check engine light comes on and part throttle stumble.. I take it back to dealer and as I the owner is standing there(Buellistic knows who I am talking about) and I explain the situation to him. They take it back in and after a few more days I get a call saying to come get my bike it is fixed.. This time they replaced the TPS sensor. The bike ran great from that day on. Check for dead spots on the TPS..

Davefl,

I have suspected the tps and plan to reset it Saturday. It could be bad even though it was replaced in December 2011.

"i" should have said, take some contact cleaner and spray the TPS while working the throttle WOT/CT several times ...

The metal wiper and resistor board do get dirty from use ...

You can buy the contact cleaner at RADIO SHACK ...

Take your old TPS apart so you will know what they look like inside !!!

ALWAYS ASK FOR YOUR OLD PARTS FROM THE DEALER !!!

Try TPS228 from autozone. Take in your original to compare. All the tuber electronics seem to be from mid 90's ford V8's, usually an F150 or Mustang.

You know how your radio with the slide potentiometer sounds when you adjust the volume after it's sat at the same spot for a while---lots of static when sliding.

If you "exercise" that sliding pot the full range in both directions, it doesn't pop and crackle for a little while.

All carbon slug pots (sounds like the TPS is one too) do this.

I would suggest "exercising" the throttle, with engine off, the full travel, several times, and rapidly. This will clean the wiper and you'll have a solid connection...for a while anyway.

Repeat often!

I had an issue with a stumble/miss on my 2000 S3. No codes set and it was worse in the rain which made me think it was a wiring issue. The problem progressively got worse and worse. It ended up being a bad ecm which I was able to diagnose because I had two of them and was able to swap back and forth several times to be sure. If all else fails with regard to the TPS, O2, wiring etc. it might be worth a try.

When I do a TPS reset tomorrow, I'll spray some contact cleaner on it (bought some 2 weeks ago when trying to cure the problem) and exercise the throttle as suggested.

Where exactly would I spray the contact cleaner? And where is the idle screw located? The ecmspy instructional pdf says it is on the left side behind the air scoop, but I'm sure that refers to a different bike. Mine does have a curious looking tube w/a hex fitting in the end of it zip tied just beneath the tank on the left side between the cylinders. Would that be a cable that's attached to the screw; that was mentioned in the ecmspy instructions as a possibility. I don't see that in the FSM for my bike though.

That curious looking tube with the hex center is your idle adjust.

Your cam position sensor may be failing. There's no trouble code for it, but they often look and smell burnt when failing.
