Charging system stopped working last year. Followed FSM and found it had a bad stator.

Put in a new stator last week and had good voltage from the stator, but its still not charging.

Checked the system again and found a bad VR (12v at stator plug). swapped it out and I get 14.5v at the battery now when I bring the rpms up (2k or so) but only 12.5v or so at idle.

Should be outputting more at idle I would think. But I'm stumped now. Any ideas?

Should have 38-52 A/C at the stator.
You're good to go, I just installed a new V/R on my S3 last week and have the same numbers.

At work now, but stator output was right in line with what the fsm said it should be. The new regulator checks out good (obviously) I was just expecting more voltage at idle.

I believe the stator puts out around 10 ACV or so per 1000 rpms. That would agree with the spec 38-52 VAC at, I think, 3000 rpms. So if it idles at, say, 1100 rpms, then 12.5 VDC is about right.

LoL. Sorry Turbo... but unless you upgraded to the xb 3phase stator, your single phase 19 amp stator doesnt start charging till well over idle. A single phase just doesnt have enough frequency to A) actually rise up to 12 volts DC (aka ~24volts AC) and B) overcome the drain from the bike running itself.

Idle never charges. It merely self-sustains and keeps you out of a DIScharge state.

Hence the "30 minute rule" - if you're gonna start it, RIDE IT for at least 30 minutes to put the charge back in the battery and get the moisture out of the fluids (primary and engine oil).

If you can't ride for 30 minutes...just let it sit peacefully until you can : )
