well here is what is happening. I have an '01 X1 EFI and lately it has been running bad. First thing is it takes longer than usual to start. it will sit there cranking maybe 10-20 times before it shows a little bit of life. then it will die and then start after that. but after the bike has been started successfully it has no problem restarting. its mostly just cold starts. secondly it is popping like crazy on the decel now. literally sounds like gun shots. usually only under 3,000 rpm. the bike still idles perfect and accelerates perfect. just the pops and cold starts.
The only thing that i can think of is about a month ago my header studs/nuts vibrated loose on me and the header flange going into the cylinder came off. I fixed it very abruptly but could that have messed something in the computer up?
any help is appreciated

When starting, do not open the throttle at all. Make a fist, extend your index finger, push the start button. Gassing it when starting is a hard habit to break.

Sure sounds like you have an exhaust leak. Your exhaust gasket might have been damaged when the flange came off.

A TPS reset and setting your AFV to 100 couldn't hurt either.

fuel injector/s may be crapping up.

Whats your AFV?

Even if its good, You could try swapping the injectors (front to rear ) and then checking the Afv.
The O2 sensor only reads the rear cyl, so if its the front injector leaning out, the O2 will never know (or let you know :-)

ok i found the culprit. i went and bought new exhaust gaskets to replace them thinking i may have a slight leak. and boy did i have a leak all right. i pulled off my headers and the was a HUGE crack going about 3/4 of the way around my header by the 02 bunge. it was bad. i replaced the gaskets and welded up the crack and now it runs perfect. not a single backfire and starts right up. thank for the help guys.

Ouch. Any idea what caused the crack?

i think it cracked bad when my header nuts vibrated loose on me. the whole exhaust was supported on that cylinder/header mount. so i am assuming the torqueing and vibrations on that mount alone must have cracked it.
