So, having Roy's S2T here got me motivated to do some touchup / tuneup / detail stuff to my S2 that's been...um..."on the list" for a while. Among the details were fresh plugs, and tuning the supertrapp a bit. Lately the bike has been falling flat on its face; last season I quieted down the muffler a bit by running 10 discs and a closed endcap. So today...I changed to 24 discs and no endcap.

Love: it freakin' SCREAMS now.

Hate: too noisy. Grrrr.

I'm gonna bug Roy tomorrow - he says he still has his factory muffler somewhere, I may swap that on and see how it runs. If I like it, I'll step up my search for one. Or, I'll go back to a Buell race muffler - somehow the lower-frequency tone isn't as "noisy" to me as the midrange braappp noise of the Supertrapp (shrug)

But...it was a GREAT afternoon of just riding to have fun, which I haven't had a chance to do in months : )

Rat,let us know how it works if you install a stock muffler.I've been thinking the same thing lately.Got to looking in my loft and realized I'd given my stock can to my buddy Ben when I traded him my Parkway Blue S2T.He's
Thunderstormed it,is running a Supertrapp and doesn't need the stocker. Now,to figure out how to get it back.Mabye a midnight raid.

I have become a fan of the stock muffler for my S2. I ran the SuperTrapp for a number of years until I realized that the noise was getting in the way of my enjoyment of the ride. Even with earplugs it was distracting. One thing I did before switching was to repack the can. I got a SuperTrapp kit, it was $18. The sound got deeper with none of the raspy sound, better. Then I switched back to the stocker, MUCH quieter, easier to concentrate on riding, and less distracting. I DO miss that low throaty sound when crusing around, and the stocker has this air compressor sound I am not all that fond of. The engine runs better and doesn't pop back like the Trapp did. I would love to get a muffler that was a bit louder and sounded like my 69 Triumph, I would also like to will the lotto too...

When I bought my S2 it had a D&D "header extension" on it*(I will not call that thing a muffler) I found a stock muffler on Ebay and can find no faults with it. I would say unless you have some serious engine mods the only thing you are giving up with the stock muffler is noise.

+1 on the stocks. I've got two '00 M2s. 1st one came with a D&D "header extension" and the second had a Force installed but he sent me home with the stock muffler too. D&D occasionally sets off car alarms in my apartment's parking ramp. The Force consistently set off car alarms.

I'm loving the stock muffler, although it took a little getting used to. Seems sort of emasculated if you know what I mean.

I want to replace the D&D on the other bike. It wasn't well cared for and it is too loud. Had been thinking about a Supertrapp, but now I'm not so sure.

So in the battle between loud and quick, how does V&H fit into this?

I have a V&H on my '95 S2.It's pretty loud and the bike runs great.I have one on my '98 S1W.It's real loud, the bike is very fast and runs well.I have a Borla on the '96 S2T.It's loud and raspy and the bike runs well.My '01 M2 has the stock muffler. What a pleasure to ride.It has a nice deep tone. The bike does cough a bit,but I atribute that to carburetion.

I've got a Supertrapp on my S2, and even with 12 discs, it's too loud. I'm thinking of trying a stock S1 muffler on it (since I've got one on hand). I guess it'll fit if I put the stock 2" header back on.

My S2 is thunderstormed with X1 cams but I think it'll do fine with a stock muffler. But we'll see.

I've had a V&H on the S1W. LOUD. Ran ok, but much prefer the Buell race system on it now. Deeper. The SS2R was crackly and just noisy. Worst case I'll toss the race can from the M2L on the S2 - the M2 is stored right now anyway...but I'll try the stock can first when Roy finds it. I pulled a Drummer off my Ulysses and put the stock muffler on it, and it runs *better*. Hoping for the same on the S2 : )

I'm at this crossroad , I have the force on now , would like something a bit quieter, but I don't want to lose to much performance. I think a stock pipe would definitely hurt, had a v&h but didn't like the crackle on deceleration. Thought about the new torgue hammer but its a bit pricey. Would like pro series , but starting to get hard to find and costly, not sure what I will to go with yet.

24 discs and no endcap, you may as well just take all of the discs off and save the weight because they aren't doing anything. Supertrapp does sell an open endcap with a hole in it, the flow is calibrated to equal 7 discs, so you can gain volume and keep the same tuning.

1 disc or 100, if you don't have an endcap all you have is a straight through muffler.

Incorrect.

I ran with 6 discs, open end, and got a TON of decel crackle and burble. Not a lean pop, just a "braaap-app-app". Stacking more discs took the edge off. Still freakin' loud, but not as crackly.

*flow* may be the same, but the sound is definitely different.
