Guy was interested in buying my M2, emailed some questions and I answered him. Then he asked me if I could email a copy of the title so he could do paperwork?? Seems like an odd request? Would I be setting myself up for anything if I did? Don't want to get scammed out of my bike, but not sure what he could do with a copy of the title? I remember being hesitant years ago when Court asked me for my VIN number, thought he might be pulling something!!

Ask him flat out what paperwork he needs to do or what info he needs from the title. I would be reluctant as well.

I wouldn't let anyone have/see the title until I had cash in hand.

after a search online it seems like some banks require copies of title before they will give loans sometimes, though the value of an M2 doesn't seem to warrant an auto loan so eh....

For a buyer, it would be good practice to get the VIN number and run a check for liens against the bike before buying. I never do that but I know I should. I really can`t see the danger of the VIN number being known. I mean, you could just walk up to someone`s bike or car and read it off the plate, rightÉ
Also, as a Canadian, there are import paperwork issues to get a headstart on if the purchase is firmed up.

Azrael is correct about some banks needing a copy of the front and back of the title. I had to this when I bought my bike earlier this year. I also wanted to verify that the person I was dealing with was the person who's name was on the title, make sure they had the title and verify the VIN number. The bike I bought was about 6 hours away so I wanted to make sure everything checked out before I drove all that way to buy it.

They may also want to be sure it's not a salvaged title bike.

They don't need the entire title sent prior to them coming out with the cash, though.

I wouldn't do it. He can see the title in person when he comes out to buy the bike.

I concur, what's to keep him from printing his own title with a few tweaks on the computer. You should meet the guy before you have to prove it's your bike he should be upfront about who he is.

I bought my M2 in CA. Seller faxed a copy of his title to my credit union, your potential buyer can verify the title is yours if he can read his car fax. Vin check should show title transfers and even transfer from the bank to you if there was ever a loan.

The only reason I'd make an exception was if they were a member here, with some kind of history I could research to their postings. You just do a search by the author of the posts using the site tool instead of google. If they were a new member here I'd still be careful. You can use peoples posts to determine what sort of person they are.

I can't think of a reason the buyer would need an actual copy of the title. I recently bought a S3T and the VIN provided by the seller was all I needed to find out all the prudent info related to the purchase.

If there is some reason it is needed by the bank that is financing the purchase, when the deal gets to that point, then provide a copy for the bank, not directly to the buyer.

I'm sure he wouldn't want to give you the cash prior to knowing its a clean bike, so why wouldn't you want to protect yourself from potential scammers?

I have heard of a few sales that should have turned out ok. But then later the police came over and tried to accuse the seller of stealing the bike. The people wanting to purchase the bike claimed it was there bike and claimed the owner had stolen it from them. Also if you have a copy of the title sometimes people will use it to prove it is there's and try and get keys made for it or find your house address on the title and come and rob your bike when you are not there. Be careful!!!
