Been awhile but I have a question. I have been wanting one of the older tube Buell's and came across a 1999 Buell S3 Thunderbolt with with a spun crank. Other than that it is complete. The guy wants $1000 for it so I am thinking about it. If by chance I do get it and the motor is toast can you use a sportster lower end to replace it? Do you all think this is a good deal as well.

From 1997 on had lighter flywheels and towards the end of the TUBE FRAME production run got even lighter ...

The H-D EVO SPORTSTER flywheels are heavier and will not rev up as fast, but will retrofit ...

Get the motor in it fixed. I looked in to a sporty motor for my M2 and it would cost me more to buy a used Sport motor than it would be to fix the motor in my bike

Is that the one one on the Seattle Craigs List? I see you are in Poulsbo, so it must be that one.

I have it in the back of my truck right now. It looks like everything is there except the pistons and he says he will get them for me. Right now the bike is in about a dozen bins and boxes. Looks like a puzzle without directions.

Well got all the parts out of their bins and it seems everything is there except the pistons. I already have the new crank but there is some side to side play on one of the piston rods, not sure if that's normal. Does anyone know of a good online resource to assemble a buell/sportster motor?

If by "online resource" you mean a Service Manual, there is an S1 engine manual in the KV. May be useful, to the extent the engines are similar...

If I had that project, I'm pretty certain I would spring for the actual S3 Service Manual...

I have the manual for my 2001 X1. I'm just looking for something to show me (lot a pictures) how to assemble the motor. I've mocked it up and I'm pretty sure I know how it goes, but I want to be sure. I'll look through my manual and se if it has everything I need.

As I recall there's a little bit of play on the crank. I was given a verbal on how to perform a redneck check but don't remember it right now. I'll check with the source.
I see you've got two oil pumps. Not sure if that means one is bad?
Put something over those threads to protect them (like garden hose). Some shop rags to keep the connecting rods from banging against the case would be a good idea as well.
The engine paint looks to be in great shape.
Looks like a nice project - I'm jealous!
