My '01 was easy, it was held on with a zip tie! Just picked up an '02 yesterday, I can see where the end of the bolt on the strap is attaching to the frame, but it looks like it's buried!! What's the secret to removing this thing?  | ||

If i remember right, the bolt on the end of the strap goes thru the frame and is held by a nut on the other side. Use a long extension from the back of the bike on the left side. You may have to nudge some tubing or wires aside as you do it. | ||

From what I remember you have to remove the tail section to get the battery out. Actually a good idea because it lets you clean things out n take care of any rust that is on the battery tray. | ||

Have a friends M2 in my garage right now ... And "YES" you have to remove the tail section cover to get to the battery properly !!! | ||

& that's why I cut a small slot/hole in my bodywork to ease the wrenching part covered it up with a small, expendable sticker..... | ||

It's definitely easier to do with the tail section off, but it can be done by using a long extension with a deep socket and an open end wrench to remove the strap. Then if you turn the battery just right you can sneak it out between the bodywork and frame. I typically do it without taking the tail off, but I also am not super worried about scratching the paint. | ||

It's only a 1/2" tank bolt, and four torx screws. And you don't have to fully remove it, you can just lift the front of it and put a rag or three between the bodywork and tail subframe to hold it up. | ||

I was surprised, too. Seems like a lot of work just to get the battery out! But it doesn't take that much longer, all you have to do is remove the bolts and get everything loose. |
