So far I have replaced the O2 sensor, intake seals, exhaust seals, fuel pump and regulator, fuel filter, and plugs.

The bike will crank over but I can't even get a thud out of it likes it's trying to start.

I am still getting a code on ECM Spy that says TPS and IAT short to ground or open and I checked resistance of that wire and I have 4 ohms which should be normal.

Also, my AFV is reading 1003%. I reset it to 100% and try to start it and still no luck. Plug it back in and it's at 1003% again.

I want to ride. Please help.

When you say "I reset it to 100% and try to start it and still no luck. Plug it back in and it's at 1003% again." are you unpluging the bike from the computer to start it? You can start the bike with ecmspy pluged in and running. When you reset the tps and afv, do you toggle the ignition switch? Try checking the battery voltage and the ground wires/straps. I found that a weak not even dead, just weak battery will really mess up the sensor and error code readings. Have you messed with the maps yet? I had trouble when I burnt maps to my ecm, they caused the IAT to jump to 250, and when i burnt my original eeprom back on it fixed it.

check the wiring leading to the tps sensor and the iat sensor for shorts if the tps is not reporting correctly it wont start

you should have +5 Volts and a return signal for TPS and a Varying temp on IAT
motor should start with IAT unhooked
IIRC the tps and CPS are both 5V and if you have a short no data is comming..


check voltage while cranking ( volts below 9 may cause a no start )
run a timing test see if the cps is working

run a fuel pressure test see if you have pressure
run an injector test see if you get gas
run a coil test see if you have spark

run the tests in this order you may get a pop if every thing is working

Battery has enough volts. Yes I am toggling the ignition correctly. Has a brand new fuel pump and it tests good. Coil tested good long ago when I checked it. The injectors don't prompt a code when tested via ECM spy. I checked the resistance of the ground wire to the tps and iat at the connector and it was good.

is the TPS signal OK?
when live and you open and close the throttle
the tps value goes up and down?

( try it )

Try going old school diagnostic. Take the plugs out and ground the threads and crank the bike and observe spark. When you remove the plugs are they wet with fuel or dry?

In the old thread you had a big difference in compression (110 and 180), i would look into that.
Afv of 1003% ? do you mean 103%, thats fine.
In ecmspy the head temp sensor (ETS) should be at ambient temp when cold and rise steadily as it warms with no erratic jumps.
Intake temp sensor should also be at ambient, not change much as it warms and be steady.

My x1 was throwing an Iat short code when i first got it, turned out to be a dirty connector to the fuel pump, cleaned it and zip tied it together, problem solved.
Sometimes the wire off the ETS wears against the rocker cover.
So check all connectors and fuses/relays contacts, ignition switch not getting warm.
Make sure grounds are clean/tight.
Remove the clutch and kick stand switches by jumping the wires together.

Volts at the battery don't mean much. A 12VDC may still not have enough load capacity to do the electrical magic needed plus turn the bike over.

Pull it and take to a battery shop and have them load test it.

Does the fuel pump cycle on when you turn the key on? And you have spark at spark plugs? Are the plugs even getting wet from fuel going into combustion chamber?

Eliminate the battery as a suspect by hooking a car battery to it with full size battery cables. Did the spark plugs have spark with the old school test? Got a can of starting fluid? If it kicks with the juice, your issue is in the fuel injection. If it does not ever spark, your cam position sensor, ECM, or coil is at fault.

I have spark. I have fuel. Something has got to give somewhere.

The afv is indeed 1003%

Checked the cps yesterday and it looks clean and normal.

Yes the tps values change when I roll on the throttle to the appropriate values

The AFV is a symptom of the problem and the reason the bike wont start. Do you have an original eeprom to burn back on to the bike? Something is making the ecm think that the bikes maps are too rich in the closed loop area and is trying to compensate for it and it is leaning it out with the afv. Have you checked the O2 sensor because this is what the ecm uses to come up with the afv. Maybe the wire is shorted or something. Try unplugging the o2 sensor and starting the bike.

high afv ,ecm sees a lean condition and is adding fuel.
on the other maps screen in ecm spy my afv is set at a max of 150 and a min of 50.
i would try another ecm.

I've replaced the o2 sensor and also tried starting it unplugged as one of the first things I did.

I'm going to try a new ECM because I do t have any of the original programming unless someone can send me it.

As said before, the default AFV range is between 50 and 150. You could try locking the value at 100 and see if you still get the high value. If you do, I'd say there is something wrong with the ECM.

Do you have a race ECM or stock ECM with a race map, stock 99 ECMs won't accept programming changes. I would guess your problems are related to the TPS/IAT codes, they aren't setting for no reason. Try a known good ECM to eliminate the ECM as the problem.

im assuming its a stock tuned ecm because its not the true race ecm. thanks for the eeproms guys. ill try that and see where it gets me. i work at a harley/buell dealer in the parts dept so i can get a new ecm cheap if they are still available. would i need to do anything to it if i were able to get a new one or just plug it in and go?

Did you change the static timing at all? If you have spark and you have fuel, there's not much else stopping that thing from popping off, electronics be damned. They can't stop gasoline from igniting.

read the tuning guide and still couldnt figure it out.

one of the guys in the shop had a good ecm laying around and we threw it in today and whah lah...it fired up!

however, it is still only running on one cylinder so he checked the timing and everything is good. we ran some "special" injector cleaner through it and letting it sit over night and hopefully that will clear it up. if not injectors are very cheap (60 some bucks retail) so that is a releif.

i'll keep you guys posted!

The new injectors are in and it runs like a champ. After replacing the entire fuel system, the bike now runs better than when I bought it! Thanks for the help guys
