Good evening everyone. I have been researching what different options are out there to modify the existing undertail of an X1 and have not found many write ups. I found one where a guy cut the plastic undertail in 3 pieces and then re-assembled them. Looks like a good idea but I wanted to know if anyone else has some alternative ideas and any write ups or pictures of the undertray.
I am also looking at gutting my stock air box in order to improve air flow. I have also tried researching this and have not found many good write ups on it. If anyone has any write ups on this I would appreciate it.
I have gone to the X1-files and both links to the fender eliminator mod and air box gutting are no longer active.
I am trying to do both of these modifications as cost effectively as possible, so buying a $300 carbon fiber fender eliminator or a forcewinder intake is out of the question. They are nice but out of my ballpark.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jeremy

Don't gut the stock X1 airbox.
Dirt gets in.
There aren't enough screws to hold the lower seal up against the backing.

The gutting thing works well for the other models of tuber though.

Mine was a demo and the dealer had gutted it before I even saw it.
Sand and gravel get in there!

Am I missing something? From the 1 or 2 pictures and posts that I have seen I would still be installing a K&N filter over the end of the snorkel, but it looks like I would be cutting out the interior wall of the shroud. If I still have a filter installed on the end of the snorkel wouldn't this be like a forcewinder except it has the large plastic shroud in place keeping it out of the rain? If this is the case why would it matter if a little dirt got in the shroud? Maybe there is more to it than just cutting out the interior wall of the shroud.

Jeremy,this is what your after.

I had to cut 2" off the snorkel, move IAT the same 2" and plug the Heimholtz holes.
You will have to trim off the OEM air cleaner support on the inner back plate and inside the outer cover, die grinder + carbide burr makes quick work of it.

Here's my version for the undertail.

I used .095 Aluminum.

Here is the link for the X1 Files. It is still active.

I gutted the airbox on my S3T and rode with it for a lot of miles. I had trouble keeping it sealed. I removed the snorkel and replaced it with the venturi ring. When set up like that anything that can get in the airbox can go right into the engine.

I eventually came across a Buell carbon fiber race kit. I'm much happier with that.

Wow Jramsey, that's one good tail-tidy, very nice.

By the way, I'm from Wichita, originally, I have relatives in Iola and Chanute.
Some good roads down in those Ozarks ?
Been too long since I been there.

Jramsey,

Yes those are both items that I am looking for. So it is as simple as I was thinking. You cut out some of the interior plastic to make room for the filter, cut the snorkel back, relocate the IAT, fill the two holes in the snorkel and install the filter. I do not see any potential for dirt or road debris to get into the motor with this set up. Correct?
I have ordered the XB rocker covers with all the necessary fittings and a engine breather catch can. WIth this new setup I can remove the 2 rubber tubes coming into the snorkel and use the hole in the snorkel for my IAT sensor, Correct?
I do like your undertail. To me it looks like you cut the stock undertail and then took a piece of aluminum bent it 4 times and then cut it to fit. Correct? Did you have to use a metal break in order to get those nice straight bends in it? Where the aluminum plate meets the swingarm there is a small gap. How do you keep water from getting between the two and into the area under your seat?

By the way your bike looks great. My first X1 was red and I would love to remove the plastics from the one I just got and put red plastics on it.

Thanks for your help

"Am I missing something?....."

The rocket surgeons that gutted my X1 took out the plastic snorkel so that the inake was coming from the unfiltered area below the throttle body.
I installed a forcewinder after the third time I cleaned sandy dust from inside the throttle body.

After rerouting my breather away from the intake, my throttle body has been squeaky clean ever since.

Correct, I removed the flimsy hollow plastic spacer that goes between the snorkel an throttle body and machined an Aluminum one to replace it, drilled and tapped another hole so it has 3 bolts holding the snorkel flange instead of 2 for better sealing.
IIRC, Al sells or use to sell an Aluminum spacer pretty cheap.

I cut the stock undertail about 1" behind the bungee cord slots, the material was cut first then broke, its 2 pieces, the tag piece is sandwiched between the undertail and the tail section and held with the tail light base mounting studs.

Don't quite understand the swingarm gap reference but I don't ride the X1 in the rain as I have others more suitable for those days.

Natexlh1000,

In your case it would make sense that there is the potential for dirt to get into the intake. Some people do not think before they cut and throw away parts.

Jramsey,

I did not see any aluminum spacer on american sport bike like you had mentioned. It would be nice to give the snorkel a little more support like you did. I will have to get a small sheet of aluminum and see what I can create with it.

http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/A5030FI.html

The stock spacer is .500 wide, I made mine .625.
The one in the link appears to be even wider, might need to be faced off to keep the air cleaner from rubbing on the outer air box.

i used the same spacer Jramsey just posted. it has a hole in it for the IAT sensor. I used a new K&N and built a new mount to hold it in the stock position, then used sealing cord around the box to make sure the box has a good seal. plugged the breather holes coming into the box since i have a catch can installed. I havent found any dirt in my box. got about 1000 miles on this new design.

Jayvee, I'm about 35 miles due east of Chanute..1-1/4 mile short of the Ks/Mo state line, lots of good roads to ride the further one gets over into S/W Mo.

Is the only reason you use the spacer to strengthen where the snorkel mounts to the intake? Or do you need to use it for another reason?

Correct, here's a pic of the oem spacer, note the slots between the bolt holes, not much in the way of gasket surface sealing area.

And if over tightened it will warp and leak.
