Kinda what I was expecting to see.

This is usually avoidable by doing the big heat thing when it is FIRST slide-hammered. The seal pops out much easier, not letting the guide bushing push back enough against the slide bushing to make it wedge to begin with.

But even with heat, there can be a little bit of trauma to both the slide and guide bushings. Which is one reason why I recommend replacing them any time you're in there. For now, they're cheap enough to make it a no-brainer. But they've gotten damned pricey on the WP forks now.

Glad you got it apart!!

Al

Man... My forks have over 20kmi on them and I'm not sure if they've ever been serviced (I've owned the bike since 11kmi).

Rebuilding forks doesn't look too teribly hard, but can anyone tell me how long it typically takes for your first time?

Will probably get new springs and some gold valves as well when I do this.

This was my first time and I would say had I not had problems with the left fork I could have had these off the bike, pulled apart, cleaned, new internals, and reassembled in under 30 minutes each Fork.

Aside from the issue I had this really should have been a fairly simple maintenance job that anyone with a basic set of tool can handle. Even though I had the binding problem as always it was good experience in a worse case scenario.

That's awesome to hear. At an hour of my time, there's really no reason not to get this on my radar.

Now the only questions are... New Springs? Gold Valve kit? Both?

My bike only has 11K on the clock so I opted out on changing the springs and valves. Really the only reason I went in at all is that when I bought it the seals were leaking. I'll respring and valve the next time, probably another 10K down the line.

Well after all the trouble with the bound fork, my baby is all better. Forks were cleaned well, new internals, fresh oil, and everything seems ok. Thanks for all the help and input.
