Hey guys new to the forum. Bought a 2000 X1 6200mi, force exhaust, race ECM.

Ran into a new problem. Rode it about 100miles this weekend. Toward the end of that it started running like straight crap. Hooked up ecmspy and afv was 150. So reset it to 100 and was going to check timing but I don't know exactly what I'm looking for as far as a timing mark. I see two marks really.

Plug r/h side between cylinders,3/8" hex fits.
Remove it and rotate crank,there will be a narrow groove that looks like a chisel mark, that is the TDC mark when centered in the hole,Ignore the OO and O markings.

Check the head temp sensor located in rear head. Also have a look at your plugs. When my temp sensor died, the ECM apparently thought engine was hot so made fuel mixture rich. Ran like crap and fouled the plugs.

btw, this didn't throw a code.

Well I came home this evening and got the timing tuned in. I believe I do need new plugs and figured I would replace the o2 sensor also. According to ecmspy my bike heats up fine so that would make me think the temp sensor reads good, or is there another sensor for that? Also I am thinking new fuel filter since the bike basically sat for 5 years.

Also I can't seem to get a idle dialed just right, it jumps around so much.

There are two temp sensors on the bike.
One is on the rear head and measures the engine temp.
The other is in the intake and measures the air temperature. Intake air temperature is used to compensate for air density.


You can test the O2 sensor off of the bike:
Take it out of the bike and put it in a vice with the sensor end pointing up.
Connect a digital volt meter to the lead and the body.
Now the fun part!
roast the sensor's end with a propane torch a bit and then take the flame away.
When you do this, the sensor should put out about a volt.

I'd look at the intake seals--something went really lean in the learned fuel area causing ecm to add 50% more fuel to the entire map.

alright bought a new o2 sensor but haven't installed it yet, will do tomorrow. Also is P0278.4A8A the correct part number for the head temp sensor. Thanks in advance.

if the temp is steady in ecmspy then i would say the ETS is ok.
As Firemanjim said i would check intake seals

My 2002 X1 ran like crap as well as soon as I flashed the Race ECM with ECM Spy.
I think it may be because of the Force exhaust properties (which I'm also running). It would run really bad in the closed loop range and would lean itself out (spark plugs were white as snow).
I used the ECM Spy to turn off the O2 sensor's input and it has been running fine since (it appears to be a little rich according to the spark plugs' color, but I'd rather have little rich than a lot lean).
I also turned off the O2 sensor's trouble code light.

So is it possible to re flash the race ECM with a new copy of the race map? If so anybody care to PM it? Also I haven't changed the o2 sensor yet but I did do propane around intake gaskets and nothing but I ran out. So I will do a thorough test ASAP.

You can go and by a bosh o2 sensor for around $12.00 part#12014 i would buy a rear head temp sensor also just in case because you will need it eventually.

I got the o2 sensor just not the time yet. Is there a autopart store replacement for the head temp sensor or do I have to get it through HD? Thanks
