Ok so it started with the vent tube spitting oil, then I found out I have to buy 2 new tires to pass inspection, NOW....I go for a ride today and after get home and there is oil leaking (drip about once every 3-4 seconds) off the bottom of my muffler....so I get down, look under, and inspect. On the bottom of the gearcase, right where it comes together I could see what looked like a gasket that was basically disintegrated and hanging/falling out and the oil was clearly leaking from here. So I looked in my service manual and that area is where the gearcase cover gasket is so I assume that is what it is. So I did a little research and I find this:

So which gasket do I need from the article (which is kinda confusing) its saying to use the one on the left for my 2000 Cyclone. However, the one he is saying to use is for 99 and below year models????

I plan on taking the bike to a family friend who works on HD regularly but not Buell very often.

Thoughts????

the 99 and the 2000 are the same. I dont think they changed anything until 2002.

Use the newer style metal/gasket 91-03 Sportster/Buell primary gasket. The # on my spares is PC-34955-89-FM. It is not hard to change but a spare hand is always appreciated. I don't know if this # is a Harley #. But they work.

Order a shift shaft seal (37101-84) and an extra to keep in the tool box. No better time to replace the starter gasket (31488-81A) but at least make sure The starter is properly torqued while in there.

A thin layer of Hylomar around the primary gasket will hold it in place and make assembly easy.

Did you ever figure out if the primary was just over-filled or is it still possible that you have a main oil seal failure? Now would be the time to do that too. And a dab of high-temp RTV around the stator wire exit before putting it back together.

Do you have the updated primary tensioner yet? Shifter drum pins fully seated (red locktight to keep them there).

Put a wrap of electrical tape over the shift shaft splines too, just to keep from doing any damage to the shift shaft seal. If you're not seeing any signs of seeping oil there then just wrap it before you pull the cover and you should be fine on the reinstall.

Definitely recommend the starter gasket as Jim2 says, mine's been leaking for years (oil on the primary case under the starter, kind of at the base of the rear cyl), bugs me every time I wash the bike but I always forget it when I have the primary open.



My 2000 M2 came with the proper primary chain adjuster from the factory. So I suggest saving the money until you know for sure that it needs to be replaced, seals and gaskets are inexpensive, the tensioner is not pricey but its $15 make a lot of PB&J sandwiches.
