Hello all, just noticed today (the day I bought my bike and got tags) that the trans vent tube is apparently spurting oil out? (noticed after about a 40 mile ride) It was all over the underside of the seat, on the tire plastic guard, and on the tire and wheel itself. What is going on here? How do I fix this? Please help!?!?
Text me if you like...if not please reply.

Josh, You double posted this thread, hopefully the mods can delete one of them.

It is very common for new Buell owners to add oil when checking fluids pre-ride. It's kind of a right of passage...

Several questions to help identify the source of the oil (for sure).

QUESTION #1

Did you add oil to your res while the bike was cold, or had sat for an extended period of time?

For now, start the bike... when the bike is running, have some supplies handy for the mess, run for a couple min, then carefully clean-up if you did that. Otherwise, start the bike if oil is low on the dip stick, and let it warm a minute or two, if it's low on the stick now you're not overfilling, problem is more likely crank shaft seal is done.

QUESTION #2

Remove the clutch inspection cover (derby cover). If you have a rear stand use it.

Does oil pour out?

If so, you will need to replace, or have replaced, the main seal on the crank. It's pressurized from the engine side, so oil pushed from there to the primary, and got spit into the tranny.

Unless someone added fluid to the primary side through the chain inspection hole, thinking it had to be full to there.

I'd text you, but it's getting late you time zone. I'm off duty for a couple days, so if you want I can help over the phone. I have not replace the seal myself, but it's been done and documented here by others. So we can get you pointed in the right direction.

Just to take what Buggles said another step. The oil reservoir and the dip stick on the tubers is above the engine. As the bike sits the oil drains out of the reservoir and settles in the engine. So when the bike is cold it may look like you're low on oil. Then you over fill it.

Always run the engine before or even while you're checking the oil level. That way the reservoir will be at it's highest (most full) level. And if it isn't obvious already, level the bike.

Yea I did not add oil, today I will run it and check the oil. The kid I bought it from says he "never had this problem" go figure. I'm thinking its that crank seal. And I'm kinda conFused lil bugles on how I can check this by opening the crank case? And where to even do this. I'm no mechanic however I would really like to learn how to fix these things and identify these parts myself.

Josh,

This will show you what cover to take off and where your trans fluid level should be.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/Manuals/S1_1 996-1997_Service/BU1b.pdf

You will need to scroll down a few pages to the clutch section.

If you pull the cover off and oil pours out, It's probably new seal time. I've done the seals on the M2 and S2, not a bad job but you do need a few special tools.

Josh, take it around the block a couple of times, then check the oil warm. It should be somewhere between the two marks on the dipstick. I run my tubers midway up the dipstick. Or, you could dump all the old oil out and, with a new oil filter, add 3 quarts of fresh oil.

Regarding checking on whether your primary area is full of oil, pull the derby cover off, bike level, and see if the oil gushes out. If it doesn't and seems to be about at the bottom of the clutch adjuster, then you have one problem, someone just overfilled the engine oil tank. If you do have a gusher of oil when you pull the derby cover off, then the main seal needs to be replaced.

I cleaned her up warmed her up (oil level is good) and took it out for another ride today (40 miles) no oil spit out the tube. now I did not shift any higher then 4000 rpm. So, what you all think now? Yesterday I was at higher rpm and speed on the interstate.

So when you get around to checking the primary fluid be sure to take the cover off carefully. One thing to be aware of is there is a spring under the cover so break each of the screws loose first, then start removing them, if you pull them out one at a time without loosening the others you are likely to strip one of the heads.

If you strip a head on the torx fasteners, assuming you still have torx head fasteners securing the derby cover, it's not a big deal to drill the head off, once the cover is removed they generally come out pretty easily. Take those fasteners to the HD shop or specialty cruiser shop and replace them with a higher grade allen head fastener if it hasn't been done yet.

You crank breather line will spit a messy mix of oil and water under spirited riding if it doesn't route into a catch container or the ground you'll have that to clean off your bike.

Ok, so I took it back out on the highway speeds of about 85-90. Still didn't change gears above 4500 rpm. I'm not 100% sure buying think I did above 4500 yesterday. @littlebugles what you mean "spirited"? And is it possible this is only gunna happen when I get up into the "yellow" as far as RPMs? I don't really have a whole lot of money to fix it.

Yeah I had that problem when I got my bull. I added to much oil in the tranny and it puked out every where! It stopped when it puked out enough to set the level right. What a mess! Live and learn

I had a lot of crud making its way out of the motor at that speed (85-90ish) on the interstate.

I could ride the canyons hard, a lot of goosing the throttle on the way out of curves, and see a pretty good mess before the catch can I got from Pegasus Auto Racing. For me "spirited riding" means laugh out loud in my helmet type of accelerating (give the throttle a huge twist getting on the freeway type pulling) or take me to jail type speeds.

I tend to ride more conservatively in last few years since I did a couple track days. Nothing compares to it, so I don't generally try except when getting on the interstate.

It could have been over full, it could be the start of a crank case seal leak. You will know within 5000 miles or so. : )

If it starts to get really bad, it *can* oil down the rear tire. So keep an eye on it.

TRANSMISSION BREATHER should be run to a catch container for SAFETY !!!

If you run your PRIMARY CHAIN tighter than 3/4 inch on the chain tight spot the oil seal will not last as long("YES", the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL is "WRONG" !!!) ...

Have 111,049.7 miles as of the last ride and have only replace my oil seal once ...

MY COMPUTER WITH ALL MY "TECH.HELP" CRASHED AND WILL BE UNABLE TO SEND
OUT ANYTHING ...

The code for the failure is c0000218 ...
