Well, I traded off "Betty", my '02 X1 today.

Had been considering it for the past few months, finally I listed the bike for sale/trade on a couple different websites including this one. Ended up trading a gentleman over at ADVrider for an '04 DRZ400S, a mountain of spares & extras, and a little cash to boot.

Watching Betty disappear on a trailer was definitely tough, but considering my riding habits and current geographic location, I really think I'll get more use and enjoyment out of this new hooligan dirt slinging machine!

I still have a '00 X1 in boxes, so if I absolutely can't live without some Tuber in my life, I'll just rebuild another one!

Anyway, wanted to thank EVERYONE here at Old School. You guys are awesome, and I definitely couldn't have finished Betty's rebuild without your advice and mechanical expertise. I'll still be hanging around and whether it's sooner or later, the '00 X1 WILL be getting a rebuild at some point.

That was always one of the nicest X1s, if not the nicest all around that I have seen. I bet you will be unpacking the boxes in no time.

I hope your X1 in boxes has a select seat also. Hope to see it going together soon.

The other guy got the better of the two deals. Dual Sports are nice but selling something other than your X1 would have been a better move.

Bikes come and go... The new ride looks like fun, and more practical looking at the road you live on! I hade a dual sport for a while along with my M2 and I loved it. Lots of fun, turn the key (or in my case stand on the kickstart) and go. don't worry about dirt, rain, or anything else. Pure riding fun. Only thing I missed was the torque and sound of my M2. Only reason I got rid of my Dual sport was that it died a horible electrical gremlin death and i didn't have time to mess with it.

Kil, thanks for the compliments!

Mcel, no select seat for the other X1, but there's none with piping that match the direction I want to go with that bike anyway. I'll keep my eyes open for a select seat w/ black piping, but more than likely I'll just get the stock seat redone with my choice of upholstery and trim. I definitely prefer the squared off shape of the pillion section on the select seat. That's nothing a talented seat person can't do, and wouldn't cost much (if any) more than the price of a select seat these days. Someone here in old school has been doing custom seats for a while. (I think it was Guell?)

Es, have you ever owned a bike from the XB era? Now I'll freely admit that my XB12XT doesn't make me happy in the pants like the X1 did, but it really is a better (more useful) bike in virtually every category. I preferred the more aggressive ergonomics of the X1 for corner carving, but only due to the "it's fun to throw my shoulder/knee into every corner". The XT's upright position may not be as much fun, but everything else about the bike handles better, is more comfortable, and is more reliable. After a lot of miles on the X1 I got used to it, but the amount of chassis flex through high speed sweepers was downright scary. Basically, I finally decided that I'd rather ride a DRZ than look at an X1.

Koz, exactly. Bikes will come and go. Which ones stay and which ones go has to be based on which ones I'll get more use out of. Living in the midwest, I'm surrounded by a lot more gravel roads and dirts trails than I am by hills or curves. Luckily this DRZ has the standard electric start in addition to the PO adding kick start from an E model.

I think the combination of the XT + DR covers a much wider range of riding scenarios than the XT + X1 did. Too much overlap between the two Buells.

I didn't realize this until after trading, but the DR's dry sump oiling system utilizes the frame as an oil tank. Does that make it more "Buellesque" than an X1 with standard fuel and oil tanks?

I haven't had an XB so I'm at a loss to have felt the differences that you describe. I would love to have a Dual Sport but can't imagine trading my tuber for one. I'm more partial to my S1 over my S3 but both are great. The fact that you had multiple Buells make the decision less emotional and more practical. I had a Triumph Tiger set up as a Flat Tracker which was a great bike despite the Lucas electrics(No battery) Kick & go. I'm still sorry I got rid of it
