I just noticed this is required every 5,000 miles or anytime you remove the cam sensor, according to my FSM. My S3 has a little over 20,000 miles on it and I don't think it's ever been done as the timing cover was still riveted. I'm in the middle of a top end rebuild, so a difference won't be too clear, but how big of a deal is this? Do you think the bike will run better after I set it?

The static timing is more critical for fuel injected tubers than their carb equipped brethern.

Since your S3 is a 2002 (and therefore fuel injected), I'd say do it!

IMHO, timing is critical period !!!

If you do not know that your timing is 100% correct then you should check it !!!

IT IS THE FIRST THING YOU CHECK BEFORE DOING ANY TUNING !!!

You only need to remove the timing plate if the timing is off. I check mine regularly and it has never moved, yet. 2000 X1 with 20K on the odo.
