Speaking of not knowing what it is, I pulled up to a gas pump on my X1 a few years ago while the metric cruisers were in paying for gas. They came back out with their DOT doo rags and biker shades and started talking on their phone. Dude and his old lady sitting just across from me, same pump, different sides. I finish gassing up, put my helmet on and can see them out of the corner of my eye. I hit the start button and it was like both their heads were on a swivel. I laughed to myself for the next five miles.

My other bike, an '06 Vulcan 2000 doesn't get any grief from the HD crowd, except from my close friends who would give me crap no matter what I rode and vise versa. I picked it up on a whim because it was too nice and too good a price to pass up. I mean, 125", 12K miles, super clean and $4450. Shoooo, all day long baby.

For every person who says something negative, there are 4 that ask me 20 questions about my M2 and love the fact that it's american made. I have to admit though, most HD riders (my father included) is an ignorant chrome barge pilot. I also park my not so stock M2 next to my buddies hypermotard and it gets the same amount of attention. I get more attention when the starter kicks it over and the engine comes to life. All in all, I wouldn't trade it for much of anything except for a new 1190RS.

I rode my 82 Honda CB900F to a HOG meeting one night and I had some HD pirate come up to me and asked why i rode some jap crap to a HOG meeting. I just asked him to spell Harley Davidson without H...O...N...D...A. He just turned and walked away.

I also own a Royal Enfield, when I take it to Hooter's bike nights I'll park it at the end of a line of 40K$ Harleys and the crowd gathers around the Enfield and you can see the chromosexuals visibly upset when people walk by their bikes to come look at the old beat up Enfield, the Gold-wingers are about the same way to. I'm taking the Buell this Thursday, will be interesting to see how that goes. All motorcycles are cool in their ways, it is people that are messed up.

NOTHING like the hordes of Wild Hogs out there REf HD riders, I have not gotten much of that, the only person I heard it from at a dealer was in a car ( wanna be )

You realize by owning a tube frame buell you have a piece of history, any buell is unique but the tubers are closer to the genesis of the line......

I live in the Nor Cal Bay Area and have taken my Buells all over the place NEVER hearing a negative remark from either HD or Japanese made riders. I must be an anomoly. I can say that those who have been the most respectful/interested in my Buell were my friends visiting from Europe....Germany and Austria.

I think nitpicking bikes is stupid no matter which way your pointing. I hated HD after they axed Buell, but I'm over that now.

I prefer my 1995 S2 over other bikes. Until I prefer another bike over that one. Why all the fuss?

Oh...I'm fully aware.

Which is why none of mine are (or will be) for sale. 3 tubers, one XB, and an 1125 - all outstanding motorcycles in their own right, but when I can hop on the S2 and NOT have to drastically alter my riding style or pace just because it's fourteen years older...I smile even more. Different animals, but still extremely capable.

I'll never forget the "parade lap" (basically a 2-lap-trackday) at the '08 Homecoming that I did on the S2. Passing a V-Rod and some others on the outside of a couple turns because they were holding me up, hanging off with saddlebags installed and fairly full...and a passenger on board.

I used to own a police Road King. Decent bike in its own right...and HD doesn't really build a "bad" motorcycle...they just breed closed-minded idiots. And for those who think it's not the MoCo's fault...read (REALLY read) some of their ad copy, and listen to their TV ads.

They definitely encourage it.

And it's a shame.

There are motorcycling idiots of all types. Most Harley guys are impressed with my Buell. Maybe because of the color, not sure. The best people are the ones who tell their friends "that's one of those Ducateez". After I pull up with my friends who are actually riding Ducatis which they dismiss as rice burners.

In a different direction....a few years ago I walked over to my bike in a Home Depot parking lot. A guy followed me and started talking bikes...he gushed over the details of my bike, the controls, the pipe, the frame, etc. etc...As he left he said, "I sure do like these old Buells." The only problem was that the bike in question was a 2007 KTM Superduke 990....One more...I park my 2011 Triumph Speed Triple 1050 at a gas station. A young kid comes over and starts talking bikes...he seems reasonably smart about bikes...he really likes the bike and points out this and that feature on the new Triumph...Then he says, "What is it?" I point to the very obvious word "Triumph" on the gas tank (white letters on black)...but he still insists on knowing what (Japanese, I guess) company made the bike. It turns out that he's never heard of the Triumph motorcycle company...never heard of it...ever....kid looked to be about 22 or so...

While trailering the S2 back from Texas (yes, I know) a guy walked up in the motel parking lot and asked if he could take a picture of the bike because he had a friend who liked Ducatis. I told him what it was and how it came to be and he left. (without the pic.)

Court - "But then , . . there were only 6 of them in the world so it was kind of understandable. "

Obviously you've been around the company for a long time - did you know Erik before he started building his own brand of bikes or what?
Just curious how you got in so early on such a small company in that time (early 80s, no internet to spread the word so quickly and efficiently like today)

I have a 98 S1W, a 98 883 ("girl's bike"), a 2004 Firebolt (race trim) and a 1997/2008 Ural.

I ride. People sometimes un-educated comments about all of my bikes. I usually just smile...

Recently was out the local watering hole and admiring a 1200 sporty. The female owner came out and proceeded to tell me how "bad az" her bike was, how fast it was off the line and the top speed it had. I then asked her to look at my S1W. She made a comment about "jap crap" and I said look closely at the motor... She was lost for a minute until I told her it was basically the same motor in her bike.

She continued on about her bike... I knew no matter what I said she would just not appreciated the S1W. I smiled and just agreed with her...

Don"t know about the "883" being a "GIRLS BIKE" as the 883 "i" had would run 130 MPH and turned the 1/4 mile is the low 13's ...

"GIRLS BIKE", BUELLschitte !!!

I think it's a bit narrow minded to even suggest a particular bike is even classed as a girls bike. Girls, woman ride all makes and models. As for a sporty being a beginner, I would say the Sporty is more of a challenge to ride for a beginner over something such as a Deluxe or Heritage.

Back on topic, I just got back from Florida and had nothing but respect and admiration from the HD crowd I rode with for my S3.
