a year ago I bought an 00 M2 with a D&D exhaust system, either the 426-25B or 426-24B. Either way, the header broke and was welded by the PO. The muffler is rusting and I'm sure it needs to be repacked, but since it's riveted I'd need to send it back to D&D for repacking. I am exploring the cost of that. My thought is to get a stock header for the bike and then a new slip-on muffler. There are a couple V&H on ebay right now. Or, is there enough performance improvement from after market exhaust systems. Seems to me, from what little I've read, I'll find better performance improvements from air intake/carburetor then from exhaust. any thoughts? | ||

I would have the D&D re-built\re-furbished Stock is not as good as the D&D is. If it is like mine then it can come apart into 3 pieces. Where the stock system has to have the front chin fairing removed and some other things just to remove the exhaust system. I hated the stock setup because of that. No i have never had it rebuilt. But i am sure you could just drill the rivets out and re-pack the muffler yourself but i am not sure of it. | ||

I thought the d and d didnt need repacking, its a loud muffler either way, coming from the factory it is still very loud | ||

yeah, it's kind of loud. at least so one of my riding buddies tells me. certainly louder then the stock pipes on my other M2. you know, it's the look of the thing too. rusting. and paint warn off. yeah, it's as much about the appearance. | ||

I have a stock header and an old supertrapp muffler i will never use. I might sell it for a pretty low price, I don't need it. There is no dents on the factory header at all. The muffler is functioning and a little used but it was just to heavy for me to justify using it. I love the LOUD D&D system it scares people and blows out eardrums. JK.....Well i have seen bicyclist in the mountains cover there ears as i approached. | ||

Knock the rust off with a drill and wire brush. Spray it with three coats of hi-temp Rustoleum BBQ paint and ride the crap out it. I had a good speed shop weld up my header that had multiple cracks that looked like a spider web. It's been holding up great ever since. Wasn't real cheap but I didn't have to wait and track down another header. OR make me a deal I can't refuse. (Message edited by jim2 on February 11, 2012) | ||

Another crazy idea, what about grinding the rust off the header too and using the BBQ paint? | ||

I don't know if the paint could take the high heat on the header. It just barely works on the muffler. I've always felt that the raw metal of the header was too nice to cover with paint anyway and it won't hide welds but if you've already given up on the header why not try? | ||

The super trap is a nice sturdy part and well worth the asking price new. you can get repack kits from Al and the NEW latest version is the one you want it fits standard header, ( mine on the X1 does ) I just purchased a new core and inproved mounts in addition to packing, alos its put together with screws no drilling reqd if you anti sieze them before install, you can adjust the sound level lots of good reasons to consider one..... | ||

"thought the d and d didnt need repacking" That is correct. At least, they designed it to never need repacking. The packing is stainless, and the center core is not supported by the packing. This was one of the reasons I bought it vs. the Buell race system. |
