If you don't have a right knee, it'll work.

Everything after the S2 had offset mounting screws, to move the air cleaner forward.

It will hit the frame if you don't space it out about 7/8".Kuryakyn makes a spacer.Another problem is knee clearance.
The Buell race air cleaner is shifted forward for clearance.

The Carbon Fiber one on my S1 doesn't hit my knee, but I suppose it is mounted more forward than the regular Sportster can.

You can use the stock Sportster (pre 04) air cleaner, despite clearance issues mentioned above. However why would you want to when there are so many aftermarket filters available that will give much better performance?

The stock Sportster ham can is pretty poor in performacne terms in relation to other filters (including the stock airbox!).

if you redrill the 3 mounting holes to turn the filter at a 45 degree angle, it should give you more knee clearance. Spacer will be needed as well like stated above.

It was a thought. Trying to come up with a cheap alternative to the cheesy aftermarket ac that's on my '96 now, a stocker would probably cost me a small fortune! Just looking at ideas...
