Anyone recommend the best place to get a new VR for my 1999 X1 besides eBay?

Battery isn't charging and i ran through the steps in the maintenance manual and still nada, everything passes the tests. I get 30-50 AC volts out of the stator. I even grounded the VR to the negative terminal on the battery to make sure it wasn't a grounding issue, still not charging. I took the connector that runs back to the main breaker to the battery off the regulator and put my meter on it with the bike running and it is only putting out about 1.5 DC volts out of the regulator. Does this sound like a bad VR to you guys?
Just dont want to spend the $$$ if i dont have to.

I just had a similar problem (still having it) Seems not many people actually know about the charging systems on these bikes.

LoL.

My bike puts out 10-40 AC volts per phase coil, I have 2 fresh voltage regulators, yet its still not charging enough to keep over 12.8 v. So that means its not producing enough amperage. Might be the same as yours.

FSM specs 38-52 vac @ 2,000 rpm so I'd say your stator is fine, but the regulator is toast.

I got mine from Cycle Electric. 2 year warranty, paperwork in the box stated the only things not covered are beating it with a rock or drilling a hole in the case.

Do you have the part number you ordered off of it?

You stated you ran the steps in the manual, but might you have missed the following?

Besides the AC voltage tests, each stator lead should read infinity ohms to engine ground with engine off and leads disconnected from VR. If there is any other resistance besides infinity to ground, the stator is likely grounded even though it might still produce acceptable AC volts.

Yep I tested the stator for grounding and it tested to infinity.

And the fuses and diodes are OK? Test each one.

How about corrosion at the fusebox?

well that just solved my problem. My stator always checks full continuity between any phase coil and the case. Time for a new stator I guess.... this thing only had 500 miles on it too.... lame.

Check your wires, Fox. They may be pinched and in contact with the frame or case. Unplug the connector and pull the wires out from under the starter as if you were going to change the stator and look closely at them. You may find a bare spot which can be covered with shrink wrap. My S3 had a badly repaired wire with sharp edges not trimmed inside the factory shrink wrap which I did not discover until I had already replaced the stator. It failed at 15,000 miles as the sharp edges cut their way out of the harness and shorted to the engine case.

where are you speaking? Directly behind the stator, or once it wraps around the rotor?

Your S1 may have shorter wires than my S3, but on my bike the stator is attached to over a foot of wire harness which threads under the starter and has a connector just under the cam position sensor as it carries current to the voltage regulator. This wire harness had a sharp edge inside the insulation which shorted to the motor near the starter. Not inside the case, closer to the VR.

External of the casing, my wires are all fine. Ive been through 2 brand new stators within the last month, and visually checked the stator lead as far as I can see.... though the XB lead is very short.

In a month or so I'm going to tear down the motor and split the case i believe, as my motor has a massive weap from the seam in the front. I also need to replace the motor mounts, and rocker seals... cut up the cam cover... just lots of things. Might as well just do a full frame off tear down.
