Hi there, my name is Kris. I used to post here back over a decade ago. The good old days -Court, Doncasto, Andy from PA, Cecil & the SACBORG folks. Ha! Haven't thought about this board in years! I think my username was m2phast...

After my 99M2 grenaded it's second engine, I swore I'd never ride an American bike again. Well, I changed my mind. I'm going to take the plunge & buy either an S3T if I can find one, S2 of any the T or standard variety or maybe an S1... we'll see.

So, anybody got any leads on an S2T??

Check Ebay. Nice looking S3 ending in 8 hours, no bids yet; starting bid $2500!

Thanks for the responses. I put a deposit down on an 02 S3T w/6500 miles that looks to be all original.

Oh jeez... having flashbacks to 99 -gut the breadbox? Supertrapp muffler? Banke risers & shifter?

I swore (along with never buying another one) that if I had it to do all over again, I'd have left it stock. Don't see that happening...

S1owner,

I was wondering the same thing. He left a post a couple months ago to someone who picked up an X1 cheap and was trying to decide whether to keep it or chop it. Same negativity. He should get rid of his bike and buy some generic metric bike, Buells are not for everyone!! I happen to love my Buells and will deal with all the quirkiness, if I wanted something with no personallity I would probably drive a Prius...

I have owned a lot of bikes and believe me Buell is one brand that died because their motors are no good..When Eric started to use Austrian engines Harley Davidson dropped him like a hot potato.
See it for what it is.

What it is is a marketing decision, not a technical judgement. The Sportster motor and its derivatives has over fifty years of history and hundreds of thousands of happy owners. It does not suffer idiot owners well, but will pour its heart out for you if you treat it right. Go buy a Honda.

Doubt Allan (Allen) has met Erik, being down under and all. Among gentlemen, first name address is proper only upon invitation. I've met Erik three times, and have his permission to call him by his first name as long as I spell it correctly.

Give my regards to your sister Aeon, Al. Sorry you've had so many issues with your ride, but they are not badly designed, just frequently badly treated.

My 99 Cyclone engine(s) suffered from 2 problems (I think). Assuredly, I lost rod bearings in the engine leading to failure. I'm convinced I didn;t pick up on the subtle knock down below when one needle failed & then progressively more let go.

The other problem I think was there was an unbalanced crank/flywheel assembly. That bike spit exhaust parts off all the time! I used to carry extra clamps for the supertrapp along with nuts & bolts.

So why am I getting another? I think (hope) the problems were fairly well sorted by 2002. If not, I know what I am getting myself into & am in a better financial position to remedy problems if need be. The other reason is that there is just *something* about these bike! Can't explain it... but I can't wait to swing my leg over the new to me S3T in the next couple of weeks!

Why do you still own a buell?

I inherited the bike from my dead son who was killed on the thing, I actually hate it for that reason.
You are probably right, everytime something goes wrong with the bike I vent on here. I am sorry for that and probably need to sell it..There are no good Buell mechanics around here which only adds to my nightmare.
Have fun spending your money!

Sorry for your loss, Al. There are darn few good Buell mechanics anywhere you go, which is why so many of us do our own work. In view of your history with it, you should probably let it go. It'll continue to be trouble unless you learn to trust it.

Alfau

Sorry for you're loss.

I totally agree on harleyelf.with no good mechanics around you need to do it yourself or let the buell go.i also had some bad ( expensive ) experiences with my buells before i found a good mechanic.thanks to buell forums i found some very good mechanics that have the knowledge you need to maintain a buell like it should be.for my opinion buells need a little extra care, but that doesn't make them a bad bike to drive . Nobody drives his buell because it's the most reliable bike there is.why do they??? Just like knwyman says: there is just *something* about these bike! Can't explain it...    For my opinion that *something*  is seen by fans only. Ask the owners from the bikes in you're classic race bike threat, they will tell you the same.

If you search for a reliable bike, go for bmw or a japanese bike. they need less maintenance and there are a lot more mechanics for bikes like that.

Knw - I'm on my 3rd Buell, a 2002 S3T and despite needing more attention than any bike I've owned outside of a '64 Sportster, it's been the best and most enjoyable bike I've owned (I've now owned tuber, XB and 1125 and the tuber wins). A 2001-2002 tuber will be the most sorted, but you can still expect some headaches here and there. Nothing insurmountable, though.

Alf - sorry for your loss, but after reading your profile I'm really not sure why you still own it. I love my Buells and everyone around me knows it, but the fact is when someone asks me what kind of bike to get, I almost never suggest one.

BTW, 4 months to get parts is telling of your customs process and not our postal service ; )

Good luck with it and we're all happy to help as long as you need it.

+1 on the rod bearings, lost mine at just over 24K. Replaced myself (badly) and am s l o w l y doing it again. Got myself a Kawi to ride in the meantime but don't think I'll ever get rid of the Buell. Welcome back by the way.
