Cleaning up the 1999 x1 i bought earlier in the year and decided to try and find the source of oil all over the engine... pulled the primary to check the tension shoe and it is the updated part : ) there was some oil pooled up on the area between the starter and the primary so i removed the starter and it has the PAPER gasket... there seems to be oil along the rear edge of the base gasket but it might have come from the starter. Anyway, what is the general opinion of oil leaks in this area? i am trying to avoid pulling the jugs to change base gaskets but i might have to. thanx for any advice...

Change the starter gasket, clean, ride. If no new oil then just keep riding.

The paper starter gasket is definitely known to leak. Another common cause of oil around that area is leak from the rocker box gaskets. The rocker box gasket leaks work their way down the jugs and often appear like they are leaks from somewhere else.

Who knows, with any luck, it may just be the starter gasket, but if the rocker box gaskets haven't been replaced, then they are likely due...

I've also had a starter gasket go out, and the oil was pooling in the same spot youre speaking of.

As above, do this one first, it'll be easier, if it doesnt fix it, then move on.

if im reading correctly, this could also be a leak from the stator wire, it is sometimes hard to tell. if you could have cleaned the area and rode a short while (in small quantities, primary oil is kinda hard to differentiate between engine oil...) but while you have your starter off you could put some sealant around the stator wire on the OUTSIDE of the primary, at least that will take the stator wire leak out of the equation. (the real fix for stator wire leak is nasty to say the least) the other culprits for oil around the starter area are the rear-most pushrod seal and of course base gaskets but i would tackle base gaskets absolutely LAST...

stator wire grommet.I've found, from my 'ol (gone) XL1100,to my X1 and XBR that it's the grommet that weeps just enough to attract grime.Unless the OP REALLY means POOLED,i'd pull the grommet from the inside of the primary and apply some good Permatex(i used Ducati brand 3 bond),or Hondabond or Yamabond as well as replace the started gasket.

My vote is either starter or stator.
