I posted this yesterday but it didn't appear...maybe it was too trivial to make the cut....or maybe I can't see straight...anyway...but I just wanted to congratulate Buell on their horn. At least on the Buell marked horn that is on my 1998 Lightning S1...Maybe most of you know this already, but from what I've read on this forum about horns, some are still not satisfied with their stock horn and need all sorts of aftermarket stuff. But I think the Buell horn is one of the best stock motorcycle horns ever, It is LOUD and it "HONKS"...it does not "beep" like most bike horns. The horn on my Triumph Speed Triple is so pathetic that there is no point in using it. You can actually hear the Buell horn in traffic...HONK HONK. It works best with a fully functioning charging system. For several years as my stator deteriorated, my S3 ran fine but the horn said, "meep, meep" rather than 'HONK". Once I replaced the stator the horn doubled in volume. | ||

Trivia - did you know your horn is adjustable? Take it off. There's a small dimple full of RTV silicone. Under the silicone is a set screw. It adjusts the pressure on the horn diaphragm. If your horn isn't impressive enough...try a twist one way or the other on the adjuster. Makes a big difference, if you do it right. | ||

My experience with adjustable horns is poor..so I usually don't bother...I can turn a great horn into a pathetic horn that is nearly beyond repair with a few simple twists of a screwdriver...and by the time I've got the horn back functioning the way it did originally, my battery is dead. "a few twists of a screwdriver"?? Well, there's your problem. Think suspension adjustment. 1/8 of a turn at a time, if that much. And, start the bike so it's getting system voltage like it is when you actually need to use it. That way you're tuning it for the right input levels. | ||

Those tuber horns were fantastic! I've had to upgrade the horn on every Buell since to get a similar result (thanks to Brankin for recommending the Fiam Highway blaster.. probably on the shelf at your local auto parts store). | ||

So Buell changed the horn later, sometime after the tube-frame bikes? I have no experience with the later Buells. ..and I was just kidding about horn adjustment (sort of), I really don't need to adjust it...I like the horn adjusted just the way it is...LOUD and HONKEY. It is too bad more bikes (like my Triumph) can't follow the example though...especially with all the new exhaust noise laws coming down the pipe...you might actually need a horn in the "quiet bike" future. | ||

I prefer the stebil air horn. I have 3 currently on different bikes. They are so loud most of the time they scare the shit outta people. I honked at a lady in front of me for not going on a green light she got so scared she started swerving all over and a guy walking towards us in the cross walk didn't know where to run and he was running back and forth trying to to decide what he was doing....lol some really funny stuff there. I have scared a few people so badly that it almost came to blows in the middle of the street. One girl came running across the street just as the light turned green and she had to cross 5 lanes of traffic so i belted out my horn and she stopped dead in front of my bike and screamed F--- you! (she even had earphones in) Then all the cars started going and it was like a human frogger. She was lucky the guy next to me looked up just as he was releasing the brake and going forward. | ||

Dunno the difference between high and low, and forget which I picked. I think the Stebel horn is a more complicated install... takes more space and needs a separate fused power lead. The Fiam just bolts right in (I forget if I had to change the terminals or not). | ||

The stebil has both a low and a high tone in one unit and it does not need a fused power link.....it does need a relay as it draws more power and needs it. The stebil is a dual horn unit with a built in air compressor that can be separated using a length of tube to hide the air compressor if you are short on room. The dual tone is much better and louder than any horn except for a train horn that i have seen yet. You get what you pay for! | ||

Yes that is the same one. I have never had one fail but i run i tiny air filter on the compressor intake valve to keep out dirt. If you don't and install it wrong it can suck in some dirt which will wear out the compressor sooner than you would like. | ||

+1 on the Stebel. I have mine mounted behind the flyscreen. I put a set of the electro-magnetic ones on my Vulcan. The Buell horn had some age on it and it sounded like it had some water in it, don't know how or if it ever had, just sounded that way. The Vulcan horn was a horn by definition only. It made a sound when you pushed a button but the sound was minimal. I ordered the set right after an old man made a right on red in front of me without stopping. My pipes were louder than my horn so I gave him a wrist full of throttle. | ||
