I really wanted to remove the stock plastics because I like seeing more of the engine, but a after a closer look to what was done, it seems the previous owner did a mod to the inner gUys I'm sure was recommended here (and it was nicely done). He removed the snorkle, plugged up all hose openings (did the breather & catch can thing), installed a nice plastic holder for the sensor and threw in a K&N. I do have a carb model forcewinder that I was going to use & find a place for the sensor other then in the air filter (suggestions?), but after doing some reading of the hp/torque #'s I'm not so sure I'd gain anything. Or I can spend $300 for an CF oval setup, probably comparable to my present setup in terms of performance advantage. What do you think? Reinstall & forget it or spend a nice chunk for eye candy!

You can use the carb version of the forcewinder filter.
Just poke the intake sensor in the hole to the rear where the breather would normally go.
You already have a different breather set u p so you don't need it.

No holes in the filter for breather or sensor. Suggestion for sensor placement?

Why buy the race air cleaner setup when you just sold one??
Ya got me confused now, is there something wrong with the one you sold?

Absolutely nothing wrong with it. I planned on going with the forcewinder kit that was also sitting on my shelf (it is carb model, but mine is EFI). Parts gathered from years of tube frame ownership. I thought it was time to sell one or both because I need funds to get my X1 prepared for track days (need front brake rotor, new rear tire, a snell 2010 helmet and gloves). Never mounted either. I knew the CF setup was more attractive for selling so when you pinged me when I was discussing what I needed to mount it, I thought about it & decided to save money and go with the forcewinder (I was actually typing up an add for the classified section for all at this site to review, but sold to you a fellow with great interest in it) I bought those both from members at this site because the price was right, paid more then I sold it to you, probably more because I paid your price (+ shipping). I paid for shipping in our case at a cost to me of $17.00. If you are not happy with it I will gladly buy back especially when I looked at the prices for replacement parts on it ($52 for a replacement 3" filter!).
Now I think I'm going to leave the lefthand stock plastic air scope on because it covers a fan on the left side. Can I swing the sensor to the left side & mount it in there? I already a nice plastic holder that was used to mount in the right hand plastic cover

OK, that thing didn't look like there were any problems when I saw it ! Makes sense, I know tires & helmets get expensive. I DO appreciate the deal you gave me on the AC kit, no unhappiness at all
It looks good on the bike too, went out and mounted it up that day!!

There is a rotor on Ebay right now for it though, just make sure its not from "davidjayuden" he is the "Tuber Murderer" as posted in the Old School section here.

As for the air sensor from the intake, you want to keep that inside the filter area and close to the intake for an accurate reading. You could drill a hole in the forcewinder pipe and use a grommet to make sure you have the proper fit. Give me a shout if you have any thoughts on that Rich.

You could drill the hole yourself.
if you're lazy, you could just as well ziptie it to somewhere where the air isn't heated by the engine.

Want me to snap some pics of mine when I get home?

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I just made a $25 offer on a replacement filter that has two holes on them, one is blanked off. The one that is open I can stick the sensor in, BUT I like to save money. I have a grommet on the wire already, please post pics, thanks again.

Great, hope you get your offer accepted! You want to have the sensor held in by the gromet as it is in the stock airbox. You may even be able to "form" it into the new air cleaner with some silicone caulk, just don't get it near the intake as it will screw up your bike if it gets inside!

OK just remembered my mission from yesterday and took some sexy pictures:

1

closer:

2

Note that I did opt for the forcewinder's breather setup but routed it to the street instead.

I had to take it off to clean an re-oil it anyways...

3

You can see where there would be two holes for a F.I. filter but I have the carbed version and put the sensor in the breather's hole.
As I recall, the diameters of the sensor and the breather were very close but I had to ream the filter out a bit to get it to fit.

Not ever falling out! TIGHT!

bonus shot... I have to get this poor old thing back on the road this year.

Yeah. It's been apart for nearly 6 years now.

I had just had the tranny rebuilt and installed a fresh battery when it decided to barf out the bearing in the front jug's lifters and then feed the rollers to the oil pump.

I have replaced the oil pump already and bought the parts but the Buells are still there waiting with just a turn of a key to go as far as I wish.

Hard to be motivated.

Thanks Nate, perfect pictures. That is the filter I bid on (make offer feature). Love the color combo on the Buell, those nuclear blue frames are one of my favorite. Nice old ironhead too!

Hey bsanorton,
So the snorkel of the carb version of the forcwinder will bolt to the throttle body of your X1?

I just got a 99 X1 and I want to get rid of the airbox, and Im on a budget too and looking to save money anyway I can.
so I found forcewinder part# DS-288922 but its the carb version but alot cheaper. As long as the snorkels are the same in both F.I. and carb kits, Im golden!

Yes the chunk of aluminum macaroni is the same.

Remember to keep the steel support bracket that goes between the heads.
I mention that because my early kit's instructions told me to remove it.
Which is pretty dumb since all that's holding the intake on at that point would have been rubber gaskets and O-rings.

Ive been trying to figure this out for a couple weeks now!!

Man my offer was declined. Then I was locked out. That filter above, isn't that too short? Anybody got a good used forcewinder filter to sell me with a hole for the sensor? How about a link to the best price on a replacement?

yes - you do not want the shorty version.

the AIR FILTER (Forcewinder) manufacturer part number I believe is 9005 - that is all I am after - they are easy to find at 60-70 bucks. I'm looking for a spare, so I'm not in a hurry - seems like we should be able to locate under 50 bucks though..... you can research under the Forcewinder website, or go to J&P cycle and look at the XR parts.

Yeah, I'm ready to plug the plug on a $60-$70 one. Oh well, at least it will be brand new!
