Was it mostly just the tail section or were there other changes as well?

Umm... more or less the whole bike.

Different frame (more than just the tail), engine used different heads, the X1 used EFI, all different bodywork, updated brakes and suspension, different exhaust, different controls, different pegs, on and on and on.

In fact, I'd bet that, aside from cylinders and engine cases, all of the parts that didn't change at all between an S1 and X1 would fit in a paper lunch bag, and would mostly be misc hardware bits.
