" then removed the center pipe so there was just a big chamber with an inlet and outlet."

Yeah, but it was a homemade job a few years before the drummers came out. Anyway it wasn't Kevin that put up the post, maybe an oldtimer here like Buellistic or one of those guys.

You could search the KV archives back in maybe 04-05 for it. Though I could be wrong on the timeline.

Now I'm gonna have to go looking for it...

I've done a couple of stock exhausts. First one was on my 2K M2.
If you cut the back of the muffler off at the current weld line you can remove the cap on the main 2 1/2 tube and let it dump into the rear chamber.
Then you cut off the internal pipe that goes out the back, leaving the external exhaust spigot.
This completely bypasses the internal plumbing.
It's louder but not overly so. Not sure about the performance improvements though.

Buellistic has a writeup for a stock muffler mod he did. I've been thinking about doing it. His is less involved than what BluzM2 is talking about but it adds a second outlet on the right side of the muffler. I believe this new second outlet equally straddles the inner and outer chambers. I think he says it still stock quiet when your putting through subdivisions but a bit louder than stock when you open it up. It's less restrictive since it opens up the inner chamber a bit. I'm sure he'd be happy to send it if you send a PM request.

Does anybody (really...ANYBODY) have actual dynomometer tests to substantiate any claims of HP improvement or is this just about making noise?

Don't show us some big-inch motor build. I want to see a simple before and after result of ANY exhaust change and rejet that made any overall improvement over a stock Thunderstorm engine (1998-2002). I've got a $50 donation to this website if you can post it and prove how it was done.

A small peak HP gain at the loss of everything else doesn't count. Show me an across the curve improvement and I'll paypal the money to the good of the site. I've seen it for Harleys. Never for a Buell. $50 says Buell's engineers were smarter than most here think. How's that for a challenge? Anybody?

The old battle2win magazine did a dyno like that, it showed the improvements of the various aftermarket exhausts.

You seriously think the stock systems were the best?

For total performance (not just peak HP), I'm with Greg. Yes, I think the stock systems were the best for all-around rideability and performance. The only system (note the word "SYSTEM", not just a muffler) I've used that makes the ride more enjoyable to me, is the Buell race kit with the proper jetting.

I've ridden my S1W with a stock header/V&H combo, and a race kit. Race kit, hands down - the V&H puts a hole in the low/mid range big enough to drive a truck through. I've ridden my M2L completely stock (including breadbox), and with a full race kit. Negligible difference from the stock muffler down low, but definitely more top end with the race kit. I currently run my S2 with a Supertrapp, but it ran great with a race muffler as well. I would really like to find a stock muffler for it, though.

Same thing with my Ulysses. Had a Drummer on it for a while with a P&A race ECM and it was ....ok. Back to stock exhaust, with an EBR computer, and performance is MUCH more linear. Torque and power anywhere on the tach.

And my 09 CR? Bone stock, it put 142hp to the rear wheel, with a dyno "curve" you could use as a straightedge ruler.

Do the Elves know their stuff?

I believe they do.

Now, I'm a street rider. Mountains. Torque. Lots of twisties. That is what I tune for - rideability. Flat power curve. Torque from idle to redline. Drag racers tune for different criteria. So do road racers. "Better" is very subjective. But for what a Buell is designed to do? The stock exhausts are darn near perfect.

+1 on the Buell engineers knowing their stuff. The only thing I could see to change is the seat and the mirrors. The original seat is way lighter than the replacement but the foam wears out after awhile. Nothing wrong with the original mirrors either, just a style preference.

Oops, drifted off topic. The original poster of this thread was looking for a muffler that was slightly louder than stock, but not obnoxiously so.

I think the post 1998 systems were the best OVERALL engineering choice. I think they made the best power compromise, were made of the best compromise of materials and construction and did it with the best compromise of noise.

Hey, despite what it seems like in this thread, I'm no noise nazi. If having a straight pipe made 25% more power, I'd have a tough time running a muffler. I saw the night & day gains people got on Harleys in the 90s. Buells don't seem to be that easy. The small gains come at the cost of increased maintenance, loss of power at certain RPM or complete failure of the components.

The V&H I just sold came to me without a tailpipe because it just vibrated and fell out. I have had no such failures with the stock muffler.

The small gains they make and the way most of them self destruct (rivets falling out, endcaps falling off, tailpipes disappearing, canisters cracking), I don't want to deal with them long-term.

Thanks for that link, Mike. I had not seen that. I need to go to work but, I am very interested to read those later. I see gains on those charts that just don't make sense but, it might be true. I may owe the site $50. Somebody post up the Paypal account.

The kooks system i had and the buell race intake were wonderful. The exhaust was extremely well built, no maintenance ever. Bad thing was it was very loud.

I do like the race muffler on my xb, its a much more mellow sound, still somewhat noisey but not set off car alarms noisey.

this question is purely for my own edification :
what is the average age of all the guys who genuinely dislike "loud" mufflers?

the reason i ask is, i got my first Buell while i was in the Navy and it was a brand new 2000 M2. i was 18 years old when i drove it out of the dealership and during my 5 years owning it, i rode alot with bike groups that were my age. these bike groups did not include Buells, in fact i have NEVER met another tuber owner that was under ~35 years old and ive ridden and lived all over the eastern half of the U.S. (not to say they arent out there) needless to say, my M2 was loud, BUT so were all the GSXRs and R1s and 929s that my fellow "young" people were riding. many tickets and wheelies later, i sold my M2.

5 years later, im 30 years old and just got my S1.
however, i am still interested in louder than stock bikes and speeding tickets (one way to give back to the municipality's coffers) but i just wanted to get an idea of everybodys age here, my money is on the notion that old farts dont like loud Buells : ) but im sure some young'en or maybe an old fart will chime in and change my whole point of view....

To Willflyfor...

Let me just say that loud pipes are compensation for some other shortfall... ; )

With that out of the way, I've got a Supertrapp on my 01 S3T and my 99 Sportster. Nice mellow sound, not terribly loud, but the Buell sounds like a Buell!

My Uly is stock and I don't see any reason to change the muffler.

btw, I'm on the north side of 60.

Ride the bike sans earplugs for another 25 years so that you hear "crickets" constantly (like myself) then you may change your tune, but by then it will be to late.

To me there is a big difference between good sounding exhaust and one that's just obnoxiously loud for sake of making racket.

"speeding tickets"

Not me,34 years ago I got a performance award issued by a Kansas state trooper for 70+ over the national 55 speed limit and I'm still allergic to chrome bracelets,so I'm careful where and when I pull the trigger but still bust the buck mark most every ride.

I fly loud noisemakers for a living so I already have tinitus, ear plugs are a must I agree. On the speeding thing, the best I did was 108 in a 70, you have bested me sir : )

I have no use for loud exhaust and I'm 47 but then again I didn't like them when I was 22. It is far easier to get a mellow sound in a car than a cycle.

Does anybody know if there are any new-in-box stock mufflers out there?

My M2 with its modified carb/intake and stock exhaust runs better than any other set-up I have tried.

Now I want to do the same for my S3T.

Try D&D.

Then again this may be too loud for some, I must have some "other shortfall" because I love mine. Al sells them at American Sport Bike. And yes, loud pipes DID save my life at least once.

False. I can send photos for proof.

I mostly like the race system on my S3T, but once some funds become available, I plan on switching to a stock header with the supertrapp muffler. It sounds great, but it gets a little tiring on long days even with ear plugs. I already have a little tinnitus, so that's the plan.

I may keep the race system for an X1 I want to build eventually, but if I end up digging the Supertrapp sound I may do another one of those for it as well.

Drummer has just tooled up to begin making a muffler to fit the tuber race header. Mine is in the mail (thanks Santa). So that is another option if you have a race header and either can't find a race can or you are tired of rebuilding it. Should be another great option for a road bike and Kevin is excellent to deal with.

Greg, As several dyno charts posted here seem to indicate, freer flowing exhaust can increase torque by 5ft/lbs right across the mid-range. That's a noticeable gain and it's useful on a street bike.

I've never paid much attention to top end HP numbers as they don't effect me for street use. For my taste, healthy street wise mid-range is what these Buell motors are all about.

I've run the Buell Race Pipe on three different tubers and really like the way they improve midrange. The noise isn't obnoxious, either. A little trigger discipline goes a long way to keeping it agreeable in populated areas.

I'd like to see similar gains and manageable motorcycle sounds from my '09 Uly without spending the moon.

Get an EBR ECM for the power gains. You won't need a muffler, unless you just have to have volume.

I ran a Drummer and an old Race ECM on my '06 for a few years. Then, on longer trips, the drone was killing me so I put a stock muffler back on, and had EBR reflash the ECM for me. They put muffler valve control back in it, while keeping/tweaking the more aggressive maps. It runs better now, with the stock muffler, than it ever did with the Drummer/race ECM combo. That's NOT meant to slam Kevin and his exhaust - he makes a great muffler, it just didn't fit what I did with the Uly (riding style, power curve expectations). I like the Race cans on my Tubers...but am trying to find a stock muffler for my S2 just to quiet it down some for longer trips. I guess I'm getting old.

The only pipe I ever rode on an XB that didn't cause a huge hole in the powerband, was the Buell race muffler - and it sounded great too. But...you said you don't want to spend to the moon...

And Willfly - I'm 39, and I still love the race mufflers on my S1W and my M2. But, they're short-hop bikes. Hooligans. If I'm out for more than a couple hours (like, when I ride from MD to FL)...I'm on the Ulysses with its stock muffler, or the 1125CR (also a stock exhaust).

But if I just want to go out and raise hell in the local twisties? Let 'er rip, I'll grab the S1W and smile. (and yes, I keep them both properly packed)

That said...noise for the sake of noise pisses me off. I worked at a dealer for too long, and saw too many drag pipes go on bikes, they got dyno-tuned, and they LOST power and torque. The owners were fine with it because they just wanted it "loud". That's why I love my CR so much - totally stock, stealth noise levels, and it still dynoed 143/81 on a Dynojet.
