So... I did the conversion a while ago. I put in a new 38amp stator, and a used voltage regulator. I don't know the history of the VR.

Recently my new HID's have been having trouble. They go out above 4000rpm. Just completely shut off. I figured this was due to vibration. However today I tested the battery while running to see if the voltage was low. Turns out the stator is charging up to 18 volts. I swore I had the wiring correct.

So I search around and find a different wiring diagram than what I had originally used.

https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AflAL-QRJACkZDR yYnh3cl8yMGRxNWtoZg&hl=en

So I wired it up exactly like that. And nothing. 11.5 volts.

Anyone have any DEFINITIVE wiring diagrams? Or an idea why I was originally getting 18 volts?

Previously I was using
1 - ground.
2 - stator.
3 - positive.
4 - stator
5 - stator.

Just found a second diagram that confirms that I originally had them wired wrong. Now that I have them wired correctly, chances are I fried my voltage regulator...?

Do a stator test per the manual for the donor vehicle (i.e. use an 06 manual if you put in an 06 stator).

But my guess? If you had it wired wrong, you cooked the VR.

Better the VR, than the stator. Right?

http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-prodshow/16076.html

I run one on every single bike. Tells you at a glance if things are out of spec, and at least on my Ulysses it saved me from stator/VR replacement when my 77 connector went south. Quick fix = limited collateral damage.

Thats the truth... Now I just have to find a cheap replacement.

Was it the VR? I know the Sportster one I put on my S2 a while back wasn't too expensive...but check the ratings for acceptable input V and A to make sure you don't cook anything.

Not sure if you want to keep the VR that is spec'd for the stator, or if you can get away with one spec'd for the chassis...

Def Vr. And either way I have to stay with the XB one because its a 3phase. I'm not sure what years sportsers came with a 3 phase but I know they eventually switched back to a single phase.

Big twin may have gone three-phase at some point. Might be some aftermarket options out there that way...

DAMN IT! The new voltage regulator came the exact same way I originally had mine wired.

It does not match the 2 different wiring diagrams I have found.

Does anyone know FOR SURE... how to wire these?

I am getting 10 volts from my VR leads to the stator. The stator is not putting out any voltage that I can see....

Come on... surely someone is reading this that knows.

"The stator is not putting out any voltage that I can see...."

I think its toast.

XB FSM shows 32-40 V ac at 2,000 rpm at the stator leads.

Yep.

If you're doing the stator test per the XB manual, you should see the numbers in the post above.

You WILL see about 10v at idle...you need to rev the engine in order to do the test.

I'm seeing 10 volts on the VR side of the leads....

However after driving it around for an hour last night it is doing the same thing as my previous voltage regulator. It is now putting out up to 18 volts across the battery leads, causing my HID's to shut off.

Sigh... I cannot figure it out. now its putting out up to 18 volts....
I have not gotten the same readings twice from this.

First last night it was sucking voltage like crazy... dropping to 6 volts when I would rev. Then I rode it and it was fine for about an hour.

Then all of a sudden my headlight starting shutting off.... which meant the voltage was spiking again. Check it after the ride, 18volt city. I cannot figure this out....

Your AC voltage is constant? Any chance the stator and rotor are disagreeing? Might be time to throw in the stock Sportster stator, or towel, whichever is handier. If you got the correct voltage regulator for the stator and it fried right away, it's time to go back in. Something is wrong at the stator/rotor junction.

Sigh... I hope not. This is a brand new setup... its only been on the bike 300 miles.

Definitely going up to 18 volts now.. I cannot keep my headlights on while riding. They shut off anytime I'm above 3200rpm.

To do a proper stator check, start the bike and then UNPLUG the stator connector. Check the power at those three wires, going to the stator. Ignore the VR for a stator check.

i did. Im getting something like 5-8 volts on two of the leads, and one with 10-11 volts. This is AC and at idle.

You should have 3 leads.

Check 1-2.
Check 1-3.
Check 2-3.

Check them at 2000rpm or more.

Do you have a manual that outlines the check procedure? Improper procedure will fail to identify any real issues that may exist...
