Just browsing through random tuber pics I wondered whats involved in an S1 tail swap on to an M2?

No? Yes? or yes but it's a PITA

PITA. The rear section of the frame is unique to an S1.

X1, as I'm sure you're aware, is a bolt on affair.

S3 and M2 share the same frame and can swap tails easily.

An S1 tail has been fit to M2/S3 frames, but it requires cutting the frame.

I was hoping for an easy mod. My 00 M2 seems...well...pudgy to me as far as the tail section goes.

I'd like a narrower tail section for it.

This is how I did mine, its solid rod that slips into the frame tubes and bolts in.
You can still fit the standard sub frame back on.
I will eventually do it properly by welding tabs ala X1 to the downtubes and make a different sub frame and mod the standard to fit as well, looks good but the S1 seat it a PITA for long hauls.
S1 sub frame

standard sub frame reattached

I did mine did involve some cutting and welding but the way I did it it didnt take that long. And you didnt need anything other than what was there. You can see picture on the another m2 teardown thread

That was good thinking there Mick.

I cut my sub-frame and refabbed it based on the S1 tail piece I had.

If you don't like the fat stock 99+ model year M2 tail you can bolt a early model year tail on in its place. They are much more slim, along the lines of the Lightning series bikes. You'd need the early M2 seat too.

If you ride long distances...get some seat time on the skinny tail before you do all that work.

Trust me.

I love my S1W...but if I'm going for a long ride and feel the need for a tuber? M2 or S2. Period. The skinny tail gets a little...personal.

Mick's convertible-tail idea is pretty darn slick, though. Nice work!

Ratbuell has it right.

The S1 does look good - but those good looks come at the price of comfort.

I would never give up the comfort of my M2 or my S3T just to look good on any motorcycle I actually planned to ride more than a few miles at a time.

I do like how the M2 rides but I feel like I'm always trying to tuck my legs into the tank. The seat just feels too wide for me and I'd like to tuck the body work in closer to the frame some how.

I agree the S1 and early M2 seats do look almost too small but I have not experienced either so I cant say if they would work for me but I do like the looks better but I dont ride for hours on end either.

I was holding the seat off my old Katana on the M2 and eyballing it and thinking maybe a custom aluminum seat pan and paint it to match. It doesnt look like it would be too hard to bend one up and reattache the tail lamp and turn signals.

I've also been looking at other seats to adapt like an X1 seat or maybe an XBSs seat but without it in my hands it would be kinda hard to tell but the flatter the bottom of the seat the better.

If you're trying to "tuck your legs into the tank"...that's a knee thing, not a butt thing.

Your hips are the same width, no matter what the seat.

Get some dropped pegs first, see if that helps. Or rearsets (try the passenger pegs for a bit, see if it helps). Or, sit further BACK instead of trying to go skinnier on the seat.

I have 1" peg relocators, and found my modified S1 seat to be a lot better for me on longer rides than the stock M2 seat.

While I anticipate that I'm something of a anomaly, I think it's worth at least finding a buddy with a S1 or early M2 and taking it for a ride. Stock S1 seat felt like a plank of wood to me, Euro and modified seats are far more comfortable... but the stock M2 (2000) seat didn't give me enough options for moving around and had my hams on fire with only a couple hundred miles under me.

The S1 seat I've ridden to Vegas, and Through Zion's National park, both more than 350 mile rides for me, and I've been more comfortable than I ever was with the stock seat.

Rat's right on that knee thing tough, breather set-up may change placement of your right knee though. Race breather had my knee hanging out. Hypercharger will generally do the same to you, where Forcewinder, Bartels, or stock airbox (with a K&N) let me ride with my knees all the way in against the bodywork.

As far as a knee thing I thinks it's because the M2 seat is very wide and flat to me. This is the first bike Ive had that Ive had this sensation with. It's definatly wider than my old seat and appears wider than the one on my friends Gixxer I think a narrower seat will get me where I need to be.

I have tried sitting further back but it seems the seat eventually has me on the tank again.

I had thought previously about moving the pegs because I noticed right off my knee hits the Ham can often when I'm riding. The pegs do have a spacer btween the peg and the frame of about an in and a half. I think I'll remove them and see what that does for me.

Thanks for the input/ideas guys
