Right - we're both saying the same thing.

With stock heads and stock cams in my 2002 S3, is there any gain to having XB heads? Found a set a decent price, not sure if it's worth pulling the trigger.

you have thunderstorm heads the XB heads are said to be better, as you pointed out earlier
you need a different mount and xb pistons

if you can get them cheap I would seriously consider it,

slug were you referring to a cast mount?
if so they are definitely INFERIOR to billit....

the threaded hole must be welded up and re-drilled they may or may not be able to do it. IF not they will farm it out to their local "guy",
The reason I so strongly support Cyclerama
is after calling Pammy with a question on the flatness of the heads I had done
she pulled the paper on the job and told me precisely how flat they head were, with other items I wanted
done in house and done right...

worth the price of admission....

good luck on the repair I hope it all goes well.

Base gaskets while you have it that far apart.

Base gasket, too? Even if it's not leaking? What will I need, just a ring compressor? I'm planning on just getting a top end gasket kit at this point - will probably be cheaper than buying everything separate.

The base gaskets can tend to start leaking after you have released the tension from pulling the cylinder head mount bolts, not always though, just insurance. A complete top end gasket set would be the best bet, and just a ring compressor.

Two more questions:

1) Should I bother taking apart and resealing the other cylinder as long as I'll have the gaskets? There's nothing wrong or leaking aside from the screws at the top of the valve cover weeping a little.

2) If I do take the other cylinder apart, I'd like to clean as much carbon off as possible - what's the best method for this?

Also, anyone know if the rubber throttle body seals are reusable?

One more question - will I be safe running .030" head gaskets? Anyone know what it will put my compression to? I plan on still running base gaskets.

First machine shop said he couldn't do anything and if it were his he'd just run it as is. Eeek.

Second machine shop was a tool and die place and wouldn't work on it, but referred me to another engine shop.

3rd guy said I should just helicoil it. Eeek again.

Called Cyclerama, talked to Scott, sent a photo and he says they can make a steel sleeve for me. Waiting to hear back for a ballpark price. I imagine it will be less than a new head so it looks like it's heading to Florida after all, lol.

Anyone have the bent way to pack this head up for shipping? I'm just going to run a flat rate box from USPS. Was thinking of cutting 2 pieces of ply wood to sandwich the head it to protect it.

..just my input, find a zip-lok bag big enough to cover the head and find several of those small moisture packets that folks use to keep moisture from getting on parts or that paper they wrap metal parts with that does the same thing and wrap the head or put the packets into the zip-lok bag and get as much air out of it and seal it up.Get a box larger than the head and get some packing material(bubble wrap, wad up some newspapers, etc). You won't need to use plywood if you pack it tight and right(you'll be paying for the additional weight of the plywood)by closing the box and shake it..if it doesn't move around...good to go.That's how i've shipped things like that with no problems.LT

sturdy box balled up news paper around the head.. put the head in a bag to keep the fuzz out.

steel insert?? ok....

good call on cyclerama you will be pleased.

I would not disturb the rear set if money is tight, But if not, pull it have the heads rebuilt.

think of it rebuilt ( guides // valves // guide seals // etc ) you then have fresh heads done by the best.

I would replace the manifold seal unless it was brand new...

steel insert?? ok....

He described it to me like a helicoil, but instead of coiled wire it will be a solid piece of steel.

Top end is completely apart - I'll replace the valve seals but seats and guides will stay. Everything will get cleaned up real good like.

I hope that the job goes well, I had a valve job & guides done while they had the heads.

new valves, springs, guides& seals.

No issues

the steel insert sounds like a time-sert
should be ok if the boss is ok, the important
thing is that the mounting pads are flat smooth and in the same plane so the new mount is FLAT

Everything is on its way from American Sport Bike again. I have a new billet mount and a whole engine gasket kit coming. I went for the whole engine because I also oredered the updated oil pump drive gear and locking tool as long as the top end is apart, and eventually the gernade plate in the clutch will get taken out and the starter and stator gaskets will get replaced as well (leaking some).

Both cylinders are completely disassembled, I will probably take the pistons off as well to make cleaning the tops easier.

I was just planning on soaking the valves, pistons and heads in sea foam to soften the carbon up.

Mr. Bour,
Send me your other head please.
I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that you should at least re-ring pistons and deglaze cylinders. Not saying you have to....just suggesting that you should.
But you do need to send me your other head.

Or...don't send your other head...and when you get this head back you will clearly see why I told you to send the other head and then you will be kicking yourself in the ass for not sending the other head. It's still America for now...do what you want.

P.S. Send the valves as well.
