After sitting on a battery charger for about 6 months (Dr's orders, bad hip), my '99 X1 is leaking oil from pretty much everywhere. I'm going have to rely on a local HD shop (not the dealer) to change out the paper gaskets. I know prices are going to vary widely, but as a "ballpark" what should a job like this cost?

What gaskets are being replaced specifically?

The head gaskets were changed to steel years ago, but every other gasket is still paper, it's leaking from the engine case on to the top of the muffler...

Start with rocker box gaskets: you can do that yourself if you have a 3/16" allen wrench and a grinder or cutting wheel that can cut the short side to half its length. Sitting in a chair is much better for your hip than sitting on a battery charger.

Did you top off the oil tank before you stated it after sitting for 6 months ???

Does "pretty much everywhere" include the base gaskets under the cylinders and the breather hose? The cam cover and primary cover? Just the rocker boxes and everything they drip on? The shock? Perhaps you have a hose leakage issue.

Degrease it good and then see where the leak is at.

Primary used to use a paper gasket, while in there the starter gasket prolly oughta be done. if it hasn't been run it is unlikely to be leaking from the rocker boxes, but if they're paper they'll need to be done anyway.
