So I posted up a thread about a leaky gasket on my can side cover. I pulled the rocker boxes off as per the manual instructions, replaced the oil pump drive gear and gasket. Put the rocker boxes on again ans slowly tightened all bolts. I start the bike it runs good, but their is a bad metallic knocking in coming from the lower end. When the gasket blew I was around five or six miles from home and had to ride it home. The oil was low in the tank but not empty.

Sounds like maybe a hydrolic lifter may have bled down ride it around the block at low rpm and it should go away. If not you may have internal motor damage.

+1 to what Preybird said. When I did mine, I almost took it back apart; the noise seemed so bad I was afraid I had assembled something wrong. Decided I had not, and took a sub 2K rpm ride around the neighborhood. Noise went away.

If your bike starts and idles OK, except for the noise, one or more lifters may have bled down, leading to excess valve clearance. Riding around the block with a light load on the engine allowed them to pump back up, and all was well.

Yup, same thing happens to my 65 Marlin. Drive it around the block and noise goes away.

There's a labor-consuming way to be sure. Remove the lifters (rocker covers & rocker arms off, push-rods and covers off, lift them up with a magnet) and soak them in a jar of oil overnight. Work the plungers a few times under oil, remove and clean the plungers if any are sticky. If it runs well the cams are in the correct position. If it still knocks after a half-hour of running it's not just dry lifters.

So how long does it take for the lifters to pump up? I rode around the block a couple times, maybe 15 minutes it still makes noise.

Really, really, really NOT the post I was hoping for. 15mins should have been more than enough.

If all is well as far as running goes, no oil leaks, ect except for the noise, you may have run into an issue I have faced before. One problem is fixed, and another, unrelated issue appears.

If the pinion nut is properly torqued, and the pushrods are correctly seated in the rocker arms (easy to check), the problem is elsewhere.

If the oil light did not come on, and there was oil in the tank during the ride home after the leak first appeared, the engine 'should' be fine.

Primary chain tension?

If I were in your shoes, I would pop the rocker boxes open and slowly crank the engine over by turning the rear wheel in gear and see if one of your pushrods has play in it.

I think this is the least invasive thing you can do.

This is one way an ironhead is better : ) collapsible pushrod tubes.

You are certain you replaced the push-rods in the proper locations and right side up? 15 minutes should have been plenty of time to pump up the lifters. If one is stuck in the collapsed position, it can be cleaned by taking it apart and rubbing the parts with a rag. I had a set refuse to pump up at 20,000 miles. Replaced them and cleaned the old ones; now I have a set of spares.

Yeah when I replaced the gasket I did not remove the push rods from the tubes so they can not be mixed up or turned around. I removed the rocker arm assemblies to relieve pressure on the lifters. replaced the oil pump drive gear for the newer upgraded gear, per the manual. one of my cams came out, the one that is attached to the cam position sensor, I put it all back in and set the cams to the marks. what does a crank knock sound like?

Like someone kicking the motor from underneath. Much louder than a rocker arm.

Will the noise get louder or softer when the motor is accelerated?
