I took the stoneguard and the lower chain guard off my X1's swingarm, for cleaning, but am having a hell of a time getting the wellnuts back in. I've looked at the manual and it doesn't show flanges on the OEM well nut.

Here's my crude drawing:

(===| <---screw would go in this direction

The middle is the part that goes through the stoneguard and the swingarm, but that flange makes it basically impossible to get through.

Is there a trick to getting this done, or do I just need to go find non-OEM well nuts that fit?

You need new wellnuts. They dont have a "flange" on them, they distort when you tighten them.

I thimk.

Are they rubber, or metal?

If they're rubber, they still have a metal nut inside. That metal nut can get lodged sideways and stick. Knead it a little bit, maybe spritz some oil in there to let it move some, and it should straighten out and "compress" enough for you to get it installed again.

If they're metal, they're single-use. Think "threaded rivet".

Based on my aircraft interior experience, wellnuts are not one of my favorite fasteners, and you now know why.

Rant over. IIRC, they are available in the hardware section of Lowes. I bought extras, so they would be on hand when needed. Easier/quicker to just replace than fiddle with cranky ones.

What Ak said. They're about $1 apiece.

They're rubbery, but still fairly stiff. I tried like hell to push them through that swingarm. I think I'll just get new ones. Wanted to make sure there wasn't a really easy solution that I hadn't thought of (like there so often seems to be).

Thx for the advice, all.

It's a hex nut inside a rubber boot. Thread the bolt into the nut. Twist and wiggle until the nut lines up with the nut-shaped-hole inside the boot. It'll fit. As long as they aren't torn, you're good.

While you're in there, spritz some oil on the brass nut's threads. I had to cut mine off due to corrosion locking them together.

Ratbuell, I'm not entirely sure what you mean -- if I line this nut up inside the rubber sleeve, it will somehow fit through the hole in the swingarm? I can thread the bolt all the way in, without any problem. So it seems like it's lined up ok.

Remove the nuts from the rubbers by pulling them with the screws. Push the rubbers into place on the bracket. Put the nuts back into their grooves from the side they need to be on, using screws as handles. Assemble the screws through the belt guard and rubber nut holders you just put into bracket. Tighten.

MAAAANNNNNN!!!! I cannot believe the agony!!

To reuse you do not need to engage the nut/hole at all!

SQUEEZE the thin head flange through FROM the BACK of the hole!

Of course...ANY hardwaRE STORE HAS 10-32 AND 1/4-20 WELLNUTS CHEAP.But yours CAN be reused.

Do you know a 10-32 thread is almost identical to a 4mmx1.5mm pitch thread? You can thread a 10-32 into a 4mm

Ducxl- thanks for the tip. One I will remember and try the next time I need it. Won't necessarily change my attitude about wellnuts, tho .... LOL

Finally had a chance to tinker more -- my problem was that I was trying to fit the wellnuts and the stoneguard on at the same time, which made it all but impossible to push the flanges through the swingarm. I didn't realize it, but the stoneguard fits over the back side of the well nut.

First, smoosh the hell out of the flanges and push them into the swingarm from the rear. Second, put the stoneguard over the rear of the well nuts (they'll slip over the back of the well nut). Third, add the bottom belt guard and bolts from the front.

My fingers are tired now. (thanks for the suggestions)

Hahaha

Good reading guys, thanks for the Sunday night entertainment. I don't remember that about that lower belt guard, so thanks for the reminder.

So much better a story than a blown headgasket...

...and it even has a happy ending.
