Saturday morning, 34° and an hour to the San Mateo MC show. Man I'm diggin' the Aerostich. I was the second bike in the parking lot, behind a neo-E.L.R. Kwacker, ridden by a Welshman who started telling me about his former X-1 back in the Old World. I looked at all the bikes, and its blurring how many there are. I can't believe how many Star, Boulevard, Vulcan, Shadows go to such great lengths to look like Harley 'customs'. Some even cost more or the same as Harleys. The new EBR was there, Carbon-Fiber version, I sat on it. I didn't find it engaging for some reason, it's nice, but a technical masterpiece, to me it has a "look how perfect I am" aloofness. What's left to be done to it? That's a big fun point of my M2, I get to tinker with it, 'improve' it. How do you improve the EBR? Shim the EFI? The new Triumphs were nice, they were absent last year. The new Commando was superb. If there was a Panigale there, I couldn't pick it out, the Ducati booth is always crowded, I haven't like the Monsters in years. Tried on the Arai Signet-Q, $579.00 (ya, right!) Got my glasses cleaned, and cleaned, and cleaned again. Since Harley stopped making the sidecar, I don't enjoy their booth nearly as much. Seat heights hit new lows. Ural wasn't there, surprisingly. There's a lot of good things going on, some nice customs and classics. One can tell the economy is stronger, by the size of the major maker's displays. There was lots of very pretty girls (except in the 'Empower Women Riders' booth!) But after all that, having only a 1-bike garage, I didn't see anything I would rather have than my 2000 M2. That's a nice feeling! |
